Car Trips from Bogota?

Can I take any car trips from Bogota? If I rented a car for a day or two, I am hoping to drive around. Recommendations? Cautions?

Sean

PS I hope to be able to add somethings to this forum when I return instead of taking from all wonderful people!

Car trips If you rent a car in Bogota you can drive to Tunja and then Villa de Leyva and then back to Bogota. It's a wonderful area, beautiful landscapes.

If you're not used to driving in Colombia it's best not to rent a car, driving in Bogota is rather chaotic, traffic jams all the time, aggresive drivers. Driving through the country side is also somewhat dangerous. So, if you can, take the bus instead and save a lot of money and aggravation.

Melgar Recommendations? I heard, Melgar is a warm getaway, two hours from Bogota, is this true? Any recommendations for accomodations? I assume that I take a bus?

Shawn Rather than rent a car I'd always advise that you rent a car with a driver. The white cabs at hotels do this by the day (about $50 US) and there are many other excellent private drivers. It's actually cheaper sometimes to hire a private car and driver than deal with the nightmare that is renting a car here, not to mention the possible traffic and ddriving conflicts.

The bus ain't a bad way to go, either, if you're looking for the cheaper way to do it.
