Capital One Direct Banking account withdrawl at Carrefour in Barranquilla

I tried the Capital One card today and withdrew $300,000 COP and was charged $153.20. El Tiempo states the TRM today is $1981.61. So I divide 300,000 by 153.20 and I get an exchange rate of $1958.22. Does this look right to the Capital One users?

The exchange rate varies throughout the day. At the moment El Tiempo posted that rate, 30 minutes later, it could have been different. I do not know if the currency traders ever close as it is always daytime somewhere in the world. Other than that I do not know. Go to a currency traders website and you can watch currencies change value every few seconds. I have watched people trade but have never done it myself. There are sites that will give you $50K US in play money and let you trade currencies as practice and it is free. If you have a lot of free time on your hands you can try it. One of them is called FOREX or FORES, the name escapes me now but they advertise a lot on the net. There are people on this board that would know the name of it or Google for it. It is Monday morning somewhere and people are trading currencies. Posting the exchange rate is like posting the temperature. My Yahoo page shows the peso at 1978.50.

I always said those Capital one cards were to good to be true.. I bet they build in the transaction fees by giving you a less than stellar exchange rate.

Best thing going. Of course they are going to charge you. Would be nice if they gave you more. But it is business. They are not into business to lose money.
PCL. What do you use?

FIDELITY SMART CASH ACCOUNT, no fees whatsoever, none. no minimum, no foreign transaction fees, no monthly fees, nada! And it paid me the day priors market rate. I used it in a few different ATMS..

I have the FIDELITY SMART CASH ACCOUNT and have tried to use it but I don't have the pin. They won't reset the pin over the phone or online. They will only send you the pin to your US based address. Any ideas for resetting the pin?

PCL, what's the difference between the Capital One cards and then Fidelity Smart Cash Account card?

PCL: Well that's good news to know! I'll have to check it out. Like they say. Never too old for a Old Dog to learn a new trick. I know with the Capital One credit card they charge you $10 USD everytime you use the credit card at an ATM. I believe the Cap 1 Money Marhet account/Card they don't charge anything. (Could be wrong) I spoke with the lady at Cap 1. That's what she said. Going to try it this week. Will let you know what happens with the Capital One Money Market card transactions. Ikobo used to be good when in Atlanta. Then they moved their operation offshore. Somewhere in the Caribbean. My own bank charges me a small fee everytime it's used for an International usage.

AS far as setting up a pin you can access. See if you can set up some type of security setting with the account. To set up access. Some type of security question. That only you, and the computer ever know.

Viajero, besides the differences and any hidden fees that Buongone is laying out above, I think im seeing capital one giving a sightly less exchange rate as well.., no yearly membership as well. Fidelity is not a credit card. Its more like a debit card.

As with the hiiden fees. They all have them. Was reading a google on Fidelity. They say they have no fees. But as with any ATM. The bank or ATM might charge you a fee. But before they charge you. The little message has to come up on the screen asking if you want to proceed. Most people using Atm's are there for one reason. To get cash. So I would say 95% would say yes. Take out the fee. Then they get pissed about such a small amount charged to make money available. I believe they make a ton of money. It's probably one of those quantity, not quality gigs. Like I said before. You are gonna get screwed either way ya do it. Just need to figure out the cheapest/best way to do it. Which is most convenient. And how much you are willing to pay for the privilage of using an ATM. I would venture to say you should have at least 2-3 different ways to get money in Colombia. If not more. Just in case some chit happens. It's a friggin hassel but we all have to go thru it. I usually carry down with me say 1K in $20's & $50's. When that runs out I'm usually somewhere I'm going to be staying and have a plan on what I'm going to be spending, and what to say when I need money. Donde esta el ATM?

I bank with RBC Centura in Florida (part of Royal Bank in Canada) and I always get the TRM when I get money out plus I get a $5 a month ATM fee reimbursement for taking money out in Colombia (I never understood that but never complained. It is a free checking account).

You must be getting a fee embedded in the total amount withdrawn from your account.

Buongone, you seem to be very skeptical.. my advice to you is to try it yourself... I have used my card at Davidienda, Banco Colombia and BancoAvilas and have gotten, market rate and no charges associated with it whatsoever, wish I could show you my statements.. Lay off the google.. lol

Google is easier and I will more than likely get the straight skinny from people and phone numbers I get off google, than I have off of people on PBH. That's why I do what I do. Nothing personal! But when looking for info, I filter as much as I can. Throw out the bullshit. Do what I feel is right, and comfortable with. If I did all my actions/reactions according to the info I get off PBH, I'd be lost. Nothing personal to anybody but that's how I am. I check out all angles. Like some of the threads i read about people having problems with Fidelity. Granted, It probably works for you. I'll probably look into it. Try it. And then I'll have another Option. Thanks for your input.

Looks like 6 maximum withdrawls per month:

Thank you for your message. There are no limitations on the number of deposits into your Money Market account. Interest begins to accrue on the day we receive electronic funds and one business day after we receive all other non-cash deposits, including checks, and cashier's checks.

You may make a maximum of six withdrawals from your account in any calendar month, and only three of the six withdrawals from your account may be by check or similar negotiable order. If you make any withdrawals that exceed these limits, you will receive a notice each time. If transaction limitations are exceeded, we reserve the right to close your account or cancel the account's transfer and draft capability.

Additionally, you may only withdraw up to $500.00 from an ATM each day.

Thank you for choosing Capital One Direct Banking.
