Cano Cristales

Has anyone been to Cano Cristales in Sierra de la Macarena? Does it live up to the hype as the most beautiful river in the world? Isn't Macarena controlled by FARC, so I take it that it is it not safe to go? Anyway I was just wondering if any of you have ever seen it?
Thanks

I haven't been but my mum worked in La Macarena, she met a guy called Andres and he used to do tours at there, but when she retired this years, she told me it was not safe at the moment and Andres is not doing the tours for a while, i think because of all the stuff that are going on in la sierra it's becoming a bit dangerous and to get to the park it is not a very good road, actually there isn't a road, you can only get there by horse if i am not wrong i think is 4 hours by horse because it is as we said in Colombia "pura trocha"

I don't know about the current situation of "Caño Cristales", though I do believe that the Army entered there a couple of years ago, if my memory doesn't fail me. Doesn't exactly tell you much though.

On a similar note...someone I know has been in La Macarena (the municipality itself, not Caño Cristales and not the Serranía) and told me there's a lot of Armed Forces around, even if there are still guerrillas present as well.

yep, they both present very much, but they disguised (guerrillas) as campesinos so you don't know who they are, but the town is 4 or 5 hour away from the park as i said.

I've heard from people in the military that it would be a bad idea to go there right now. Lots of armed people and lots of trafficking/cultivation of illegal things.

For whatever that's worth.
