Can you see my web cam from Colombia? ?Puede ver mi camara en Colombia?

Hello all,
I have been having troubles with friends in Colombia not being able to view my streaming video and I think I have done everything I can. If you have the time, will you please check it out and let me know if you see anything? It takes a couple seconds to load and it's a view of my neighborhood from outside the front window for now, nothing exciting.

Por favor, si esta en Colombia, dime si puede ver mi camara.

Kernow Thank you! Okay so far it looks like it's working on IE and Opera but no word back on Netscape and Firefox. I'm waiting to see if anyone is having problems with Java or Active X on XPSP2 machines...hopefully not.

Alex it came up without having to do anything but it was not instantaneous, don't know if it takes longer on dialup or not.

ACBlessing says on Dec 11, 2004, 12:13:

Great guys! Thank you all for your feedback! This is great! I had lots of problems getting the java applet working until I now. I wish I could put a date/time on the video. I think it's paying off because so far, it is working on all Windows and all web browsers without problems. There will be a slight delay for some while the applet initializes and longer still for dial-up users. It looks like most people have Java already installed which is good.

Oh, it is actually a newpaper on the front lawn, no dogs hopefully. It is very sunny today so the extreme contrast between sunshine and shadow is causing havok from this cheapo camera.

If you have ANY problems at all, please let me know what they are so I can fix... thank you all again.

Many users at once Oh I forgot, if too many users are all getting the video stream at once, it will slow down but that would be extremely rare for my site.

If you are in Colombia, looking at it (or trying), please let me know.

works for me Windows Xp SP2 - I had to enable the Java plug-in - I normally have ActiveX controls disabled for security reasons.

Lionheart Did you get a message to enable Java or did you just know to do that?

Lionheart says on Dec 11, 2004, 13:58:

My case is different I already had Java installed, but it was disabled in the browser. Therefore I got no message to install it. Before I enabled the control I only saw the red X placeholder. I knew that I had to enable it, since I had manually disabled it. Yes, my SP2 blocks automatic installation of ActiveX controls, and many other things.

In IE you manage add-ons in Tools/Manage Add-ons ....

Check there if you have multiple versions of the Java plug-in, if one is disbaled then the webcam will possibly not work.

ACBlessing says on Dec 11, 2004, 16:11:

Thank you Lionheart So you think Java is automatically disabled on SP2? I have not seen another webcam javascript better than this one so far. I just want people to be able to open the page and watch the video without having to do anything, or at least anything drastic. I am thinking that the internet cafes in Colombia have Java disabled which is kinda odd considering they serve java (stupid joke). Hmmm. I wonder if I can push it instead of having people download it?

You can also open up your Control Panel and see if you have multiple versions of Java, you can safely remove all but the latest version to avoid potential conflicts between the various versions. After you reboot your browser should latch on to the remaining version.

Didn't know that... Good tip...didn't know that was there. I had the latest version but it wasnt' in use. I enabled it and also cleared out the cache. Thanks Kernow.

Lionheart says on Dec 11, 2004, 16:28:

Security Settings It all depends how secure you set your internet access. ActiveX controls are the best way to get virii and trojans downloaded. I would not recommend pushing the control with the webpages, let people decide on their own if they want it or not.

Internet cafés probably have a high security set, otherwise the operators would need to scrub their machines everyday. Did you ever enjoy removing those searchbars you never wanted?

ACBlessing says on Dec 11, 2004, 16:37:

Only Java needed Most people have Java already installed which explains how everyone's been able to see the video without downloading anything. The only Active X hangup I get so far is from XP Service Pack 2 which asks if you want to accept an Active X plugin. Other than that, there is no need for Active X to see my video, only Java so nothing is being pushed to your computer.

I've had to sometimes edit the registry by line by line to get rid of some searchbars.

Oh well, it's dark now so thank you to all who helped. If you answer this post later on, please indicate if you're in Colombia or not. Thank you thank you thank you all....... Alex

Alex is is good practice to clean the JARS cache out from time to time, there are some browser hijack viruses that are placed there. I clean mine out once a week when I run defrag, full virus scan, Adaware scan etc... I also have Active X disabled normally, and run hardware and software firewalls. Better to be safe than have to spend days sorting out ones PC. You wouldn't believe how many people leave WiFi networks on the default settings. It is sometimes quite handy when I want to get my E-mail on my PDA. :-)

Now to put a Colombian spin on things, are there any public hotspots in Bogotá?

ACBlessing says on Dec 11, 2004, 22:07:

Tell me about it I have used netstumbler on my laptop and just sitting in my living room, I'm able to pick up five more networks with an SSID of Linksys. Guess what they're password is? ;-) Anyway, I've told them already and jumped to a different frequency. Hacks for the WRT54G will allow European freq's that are completely unused here although the FCC wouldn't be too happy with me I think.

I also Ghost my machines onto a DVD each but my work sites on a central server that gets differentially backed up to tape every night...although I'm usually here late at night interrupting it anyway. Oh well.

Jees, took off on a tangent. I'm sorry folks. Thank you for the tips Kernow. I'll look for the JARS cache. Back to Colombia...

I know there are internet cafes alllll over the place my favorite being in Maloka (Bogota) but I have yet to see a hotspot such that we have here. I don't know if it's because laptops are prohibitively expensive or what. I have an extra IBM Thinkpad R50 to my GF with built in 11g but she hasn't found a place to use it wirelessly so far.

If anyone in Bogota knows of any hotspots, I'd like to know as well!

Thank you for your patience all and thank you for your responses.
