Can we start a Dominican Republic section of the site?

I think a lot of travelers go to DR and would like some insight into the nuances of the country. My longtime girlfriend is from there and I believe that alot of useful information could be put forth by the community. Some would say what for we already have enough countries on here.....my response to that is the most recent post in the Africa section out of all countries on there was on 09/28/2008.

Lets focus on the real heart of this website....the Latin American countries is what I am driving at....but yet who am I? Justa though:

Is the Dominican Republic in Africa ?

Anyway,,, the women in the DR are,, for the most part,, butt ugly.

PLUS:
I doubt they have cute little parrots like this one at my house in Colombia,, to help fasten your watchband.

We just had a woman where I live travel to DR to look for a place to live. She is thinking strongly of moving there so she can be clsoe to her son. When she came back she was crying at having been to such a miserable poor place. Needlesstosay, she has decide to do a mea culpa with her husband and stay here.

...and so it goes

If you like cheap hookers and very aggresive vendors, the DR is the place for you... I was there a year ago for a dive trip, and it made for a long couple of weeks. The vendors come off as agressive and get really pissed if you don't want to buy their cheap trash,no matter how nice you are with your reply. I had one accuse me of being gay because he said he didn't see me one time all week with any of the local "chicas"... I don't do hookers, and told him to go get his sister, maybe she would work out for me... then he really got pissed,jajajaja...The local food was nasty, and what is most abundant is italian food resturants... at a minimum of approx $15/plate. Then there are 2 different taxes added onto that.... basic tax of 17%... and another that they add on at 24%. I guess it is all the poverty there... Everyone looking to squeeze dollars out of you... I have travelled to quite a few poverty-sticken areas in my time.. the desperation there is palpable.. The security situation isn't very good either...Politur routinely patrols the beaches, but when the vendors start going off on you, they won't lift a finger to help you.. I saw drunk cops in the street... shaking down other folks.. The moto-taxi drivers are consistent about getting in your face if you don't use them..They will follow you down a darkened street in an effort to scare you into using them... stalking behavior... I ride a motorcycle and would never get on the back of one unless I know the driver and their abilities... One look at these guys and you could tell the majority were stoned. "blown" pupils and all.... The one decent girl I met from there told me she was just biding her time at the university until she could get out.. I guess it depends on what you want in a vacation... not my cup of tea.. .. The whole time I was there I kept telling myself... Gracias a Dios Colombia isn't like this. I will never return to the DR.....If I have extra money to give away,I would rather give it to poor Colombians who appreciate it..The nicest Dominicans I met lived in Jersey, and repeatedly warned me about the security situation in their home country... On the other hand the dr1 forum can be helpful.. the guy that runs it is 1st rate.

Well my point is that all of these things can be discussed on here for people to make their own decisions. Of course I had a different experience as I was with the lady and family. I understand the apprehension with the moto-conchos. Although I never encountered even with them the tax mark up, or expensive food prices. The taste and quality is a matter of opinion, I am not saying which way I feel but surely we can all agree taste of food is subjective.

The hooker part we all know is a part of latin america, shit lets look at Cartagena. Now the part about the sister THAT STATEMENT IS HILARIOUS; WHAT I LIKE TO CALL SOLID GOLD!

I live in Jersey so yes have had the same experiences with more than great Dominicans.

I agree with you about Santo Domingo that was pretty rough as most capital cities anywhere are and Santiago much nicer. Puerto Plata was very nice. I spent most of my time in Luperon which was absolutely beautiful. I also visited Higuey which was nice as well.

Another nice town in the DR most american(male) tourists never get to, is Jaracaboa, high in the Mountains. There, Cold streams, camping, hiking, horseback riding, 4 wheeling and very nice people. Just as in Colombia, you need to get away from the Gringo Tourist Traps(read zona rosa ect) You need to get out of the big cities in the DR. As far as another DR forum, just go that DR1.com link posted earlier, its a longtime website and hard to beat as far as what it offers.

The Dominican Republic is just another energy poor country (LIKE ZERO energy) that has sold Chavez,, you know, that guy in, Venezuela ? a 49% stake in their only refinery,, the only potential source of export of refined material to other, similarly POOR countries in the region.

Yep,, sold for,, I think FREE,, well, they did it PAY OFF THEIR part of their DEBT to Venezuela.

Yep,, that's what I want to know more about,, another poor, hot, humid, low rent Caribbean island full of poor pricks.

No,, I'll stick with my little flock of parrots,, they love me,, I feed them, give them a place to stay, free medical care and drugs, yep,, I think the first word out of their little peckers will be mama,, the second,, obama.

Gracias poco. One should understand that because the country is poor it does not make the people. I take personal offense to your derogatory statements. Take it easy partner. I look at my lady friend and how she had the wherewithal to come to the US learn English, finish college in high standing and turn around and teach Spanish to elementary students. They may not have alot but are a caring people.

Damn,... I've seen/found some photos of some ladies that claim to be from the D.R. and ... I understand the general comment from poco, but.... there are some freakn hot gals from that island! I would think, maybe less educated, in general, than Colombia, but.... education ain't always all it's built up to be. Less education can be interesting... for a lil while ;p.

And, the D.R. has attracted quite a bit of business from the USA, with people going there either to get married, or for vacation accompanying marriage.

And what does poor have to do with ugly? Obviously in your mind there's a connection, but he said butt ugly, not butt poor. I also vote for their being butt ugly on the most part.
