It's not that simple. If your phone in the US is CDMA like Sprint and Verizon, it will work but only as a Sprint or Verizon phone that's roaming. I don't know about Verizon, but Sprint charges 2.99/minute for international roaming. That is whether you answer your phone or not.

You will need a GSM phone to have it work in Colombia and further, if it is from a company such as T-Mobile or At&T, you will need to unlock the phone. It can be done very inexpensively in Colombia.

When you are ready to use it, you will nedd to procure a SIMM chip. Whether, you sign up for one at the phone company or get one on the street is up to you. All you have to do after this is buy minutes.

Yes you can do it 99% of the times all you have to do is take the phone to be unlocked and that is it, you can use the phone with any network, I took two phones to Colombia and no problem in Bogota they charged me 25000 pesos in Cedritos to unlock the phone, while in Brranquilla they charged me 5000 pesos in the centro by sanandresito.

Needs to be GSM and the phone can not be so cheap that there is not an unlocking solution. Check on the net if an unlocking solution exists for your phone. If it does, they can "set your phone free" in Colombia for 10k to 20k COP. New chips are as cheap as 3k COP in Colombia.
