Can anyone speak to the quality of AMC and or UM Motorcycles, sold in Colombia?

I am thinking about purchasing a Cruiser, here in Colombia but am worried about the quality of these Chinese made bikes. The warranties are not even half of what they are in the States (same company). So whats up? Are these bikes junk? Any of you own, or know someone who owns an AMC or UM Cruiser?

Actually UM is a Korean bike and assembled in the USA......a cute story behind this ..back in like 1972 if I remember some technician and engineers broke off from Suzuki and moved to Korean and started their own Motorcycle Company....named Hyosung....I guess this name is too difficult for N.A. so they use United Motors....I actually own a Hyosung 125 cruiser and it servers me well.....the only concerns I would have is make sure you can get parts for the bike you buy...which bike were you looking at ......
I like this one

this is nice to but a bit expensive

as for AMC I haven't seen them selling here in Colombia so no comment

I am looking at the 250 Cruiser by UM. The English speaking salesman, here in Ibague, looked at the vin # and told me the bike was made in China (believe a salesman?) but that is where my info came from. Also, he said the bike has a 10 month warranty, which in the US (same bike) has a 3 year warranty.

Approximately 2km down the road we have an AMC Dealer. They have a 200cc Cruiser, looks very much like the UM Cruiser (6,200.000) dressed out with all the options.

I would have to guess the reason for a shorter warranty in Colombia is because the state of the roads which really takes its toll on the bike

how much are they asking for the 250 in Ibague

I will have to get back with you on that. I was window shopping for bikes and it started raining so I ran past UM (yesterday), I talked to the guy last week. I cannot reliably say what he told me on price.

Doc--I owned a Chinese Scooter until 3 months but after having difficulty with obtaining parts locally at a decent price, I sold my China beater and bought the same CC unit but in a Yamaha. What a difference, starts better and more reliably and the Japanese Carb on the Yamaha makes all the difference in starting and accelerating. Bigger Jets so they don't gum up and get clogged. The Scooter shops on South Beach here in Miami like the Korean Hyosung for their rentals and the manager informed me he has had good luck with his units(korean).

Search SunL on google. Thats a chineese motorcycle manufacturer that imports (US), and the bikes are complete garbage. It's like 2 rides (Not months) later something vital in the motorcycle falls or breaks loose. Not good man. Yamaha I am sure is more expensive; although, in the long haul you'll be pleased with it over any Korean/chineese bike. I would pack some heat incase you get mugged. Ja jaja J/K

Ryan619, it does not add up because it is not math, it's called transportation. I would really like to have a horse but a cycle seems a bit easyer. The busses are ok, but who out there does not enjoy going out for a ride once and a while?

I will prob. end up with a Japanese 125cc, as i do understand the reliability. The cruisers just look more comfortable, but I also understand that they are a bit flashy. With a 125cc, I may not have to pack heat, as I will fit in better (with the full faced helmit, of course).

DOC,
at http://www.carfax.com/ you can find the origin of car (I`m sure with bikes is the same) with is VIN #
Yamaha, HOnda, Suzuki and Kawasaki have plants in COL. Most of the bikes they sell are assmbled here (small ones, up to 150cc or so). Their service is better and also is way easier to find parts. I hear of problems getting parts for imported cars/bikes.

get an enduro. With a good set of street tires they handle very well and are easy to weave through traffic with. They probably handle the bumps much better too.

I have seen chinese choppers that had a couple handful of miles on the meter and already the turn signals were hanging on the wires, everything seemed to be falling apart. They make them look nice but the quality doesn´t convince me.

What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been

Vishere--those made in China Carbs are something else. The scooter shop head mechanic I go to here in Miami tells me that almost always they have to change the original equipment Carbs to a Japanese brand as the smallest dirt particle or old gas(say 2 months old) clogs those supersmall original Jets found on most chinese scoots. You roll the throttle halfway open from a dead stop these chinese Carbs just want to die. They are a lost cause,,,
