My wife's friend in Colombia never married her US boyfriend. They lived together in Colombia for 15+ years while he was receiving Social security. She never visited USA and doesn't have a social security number. He passed away recently. Is she eligible for any spousal benefits? Are they only available to US citizens? what is the criteria? It's not easy to figure out from the SS website - I tried without success. Thanks:

Mononoke28 says on Apr 6, 2009, 12:28: It will be hard proving the common law issue, especially since they lived in Colombia and not the US. But assuming that she does qualify, she needs to wait until she turns 60 to claim her husband's benefits. The best way to verify this info would be by calling the SSA or checking their online site: http://www.ssa.gov/espanol/ Diana 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Gator says on Apr 6, 2009, 12:39: To receive the benefits she MUST must have been married to the U.S. citizen spouse and lived with the U.S. citizen spouse in the United States for five years to be eligible to receive dependency and survivor benefits. Sorry, but with out meeting these two principle requirements she is out of luck. "Bene, cum Latine nescias, nolo manus meas in te maculare" . 0 funny, 1 helpful. |

Mononoke28 says on Apr 7, 2009, 10:48: Social Security benefits is not unemployment. You can check out your state's guidelines to see if you qualify for unemployment benefits. If you do, I'm sure you can file online and wait for your check to arrive in the mail. Diana 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

scumbuster says on Apr 7, 2009, 11:13: turnmeon - Every state is different. I know in PA you can file online and have direct deposit. That’s all good if your employer doesn’t appeal your request for benefits. Then you need a hearing and would have to appear. PA also has some rule about checking in occasionally too. Might be able to pull it off for a while. Doesn’t hurt to file online. Worst they can do is deny it. My information may be a little outdated though as it’s been 30 years since I drew unemployment…lol Tomas Jefferson “When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Mononoke28 says on Apr 7, 2009, 13:32: When I was laid off I filed for unemployment and they told me about the 5 job searches per week, was it per week or per day?? I think it was per week. All I did was go to Monster.com and keep track of the jobs I had filed for but they never even asked me. They actually have so many claims that they don't have time to check all of them.
