Can a Colombian citizen sue for alimony in Colombia when the defendant is in USA?

Two weeks ago, I wrote a text in which I explained the possibility of being sued in USA from Colombia; in the case you had alimony’s debts.

Yesterday, an old friend who works as an assistant for the district attorney told me that his office won a case in which a criminal judge declared guilty an American citizen, who had sums unpaid and they were related to alimony debts.

As foreign citizens you can ask how this happened. Well, there are many international laws and conventions that protect minor such the UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION FOR PROTECTION OF THE WOMAN AND CHILDREN, THE INTERNATIONAL TREATY FOR PROTECTION OF CIVIL RIGHTS and numerous 2 parties agreements.

The question is: what kind of effects the sentence can have in Colombia and in my country?

1. You are allowed to come into Colombia but not to leave, and you are hold under arrest by the DAS.
2. The sentence is noticed through the maximum authority in your country. In United States by the Police of the state with a previous order of an American judge and in Spain by the Department of Justice.
3. No type of Colombian visa can be granted to you.
4. A criminal record becomes available and it can be requested by any authority in the world.
5. Assets can be seized in other country to pay for the alimony debts in Colombia.

For that reason, as lawyer I recommend that instead of not paying for alimony, try to look for a normal sum and always pay on time and keep receive of it.
