Camp Sites or Weekend Getaways near Bogota?

Hey Everyone,

I haven't been on this site at all lately, but I finally bought my tickets. I'll be in Bogota from the 29th to the 12th. I was wondering if anyone can recommend any good places to go camping (or just a get away) outside of Bogota. I prefer some where warmer since I'll be goin w/the family. I love Melgar but we always go there. Suesca is beautiful but I think it might be too cold for the kids to enjoy. I heard of some places with thermal springs but don't know if they have campgrounds or hotels near by. Any suggestions? Maybe something I can look up on the web? Somewhere with a little nightlife too (los suegros can watch the kids:)

Chicaque, Guatavita, Tobia, Villa de Leiva Neusa has a camping park but is cold. Parque Natural Chicaque is near Bogotá, there is no pool but is a nice camping place or there is the hotel all made in wood.

Maybe you want a little of "dosis verde"

In Villa de Leiva (Boyaca) there are different places to camp, here is a link with photographs or protected areas

Villa de Leyva's not warm but it's not so cold that you won't be able to enjoy the trip. You can even take a swim in the beautiful river with waterfalls in the Periquera area 45 minutes from the town. Lots of places to walk around besides the town, yo can do the small hike up to the Mirador or go to the Candelaria desert. This can be done horseback too. Besides that, there are many warmer towns between Bogota and Ibague but unless you're going to a finca or resort type thing it's not worth it.

San Gil? Thanks for the advice guys. We will definetly check out Chicaque as we'll be staying in Soacha.
Villa de Leyva seems too expensive for a poor gringo like me. I was hoping for somewhere with more camp sites because it is cheaper and I have little time to make a reservation. I was thinking of San Gil, it seems to have a lot of camp sites and a beautiful natural park but my wife says it is too far; how long is the trip there from Bogota?

Not sure, but much farther and expensive than Villa de Leyva, that's for sure. What makes you think a trip to VdL is expensive? I was there a couple of months ago and we paid 20 thousand a night for a double room, there were some for as low as 12 thousand. No reservation needed. The bus fare there is around 15 thousand from Bogota. I even bet there are campsites in or around Villa de Leyva, just gotta ask around there. I remember seeing tents in the Periquera area which is really natural and relaxed atmosphere with waterfalls and all. Really, I think VdL is the best choice!
