Camilo's weekly column: Carnaval!

February 21st, the whole world is getting ready for Carnaval. This year is special for Barranquilla: the UNESCO (United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization) proclaimed the Carnaval as Cultural Patrimony of Humanity. The Colombian Government had done this locally in 2001.

[image:3032,right]The Queen and King Momo of the Carnaval have been elected and from today until February 24th the whole city will be dancing and enjoying the party. Saturday, the city will host the King Momo Parade. On Sunday there will be the Big Parade, Monday, Big Fantasy Parade and the Bands Festival and finally Thursday Joselito (the spirit of Carnaval) will die and Carnaval will be over until next year.

At the bands festival artist like Eddie Herrera and Sergio Vargas, The Puerto Rican Power are confirmed. From Colombia: Moisés Angulo, Joe Arroyo, Checo Acosta, Juan Carlos Coronel, Las Estrellas de Niche, el Grupo Bananas, Fusión Atlántico, Jacaranda, Son de Ovejas, los Hermanos Zuleta, Jorge Oñate, Iván Villazón, Peter Manjarrez con Franco Argüelles, y Silvestre Dangond con Juan Mario De la Espriella. The bands will be judged to obtain The Golden Congo the main price of the Carnaval.

[image:3031,right]The queen of this year´s Carnaval is Olga Lucia Rodriguez, she is the person in charge to show the world the Carnaval, and how Colombia can be in pace and having fun for some days. It is redundant to say that she is way too beautiful.

Now be aware everything will take place every afternoon in the calle 40 and in the Estadio Metropolitano. Barranquilla is the place to be, I am feeling a little jealous but like the people say there, only the ones who live it are the ones who enjoy it.
