Calling all English Teachers..

Hi guys.......

Was wondering, if I was to teach english in Cali, what are the best schools, universities to work for?

I am visiting Cali and am not planning to work as yet but that might change and just wondering what your experiences have been, how are you treated, what are the hours and pay like etc

I have a friend who works in Berlitz, have any of you worked there?

Thanx de antemano!

I think I read somewhere a typical TEFL teacher's salary in Cali was COL$ 1,500,000 a month.

That's more than I thought......I have heard that there are not many part time jobs like you can get in London?

Again, if you are not a Colombian, you cannot work here unless you have a work visa. You can work for a private school, they usually pay under the table, but that is it. They do not ask for papers. Then you will be only working a few hours a week. I work for a bilingual school, so I get a lot of hours. I also a teacher at the local University, I was only able to obtain that position with working papers because I have a family here. Oh, you can start private English classes, that will put some food on the table. GOOD LUCK

philly -
Thanks for the info

Although I am not colombian I also have family in Cali.

My question is: what are the best places to work for, the nicest, not necessarily the best paid....and do any of the teachers where you work do part time hours?

it does not matter if you have family. you need a work visa. i have a wife and kid, i quaified for a padre de hija visa. i do not know a thing about cali, i live in pamplona norte de santader. its the same situation everywhere. schools are in the middle of the year now, i would think it would be tough, but hey, i lucked up in my position, maybe u will do the same. explain to me more about ur family.

I knew about the work visa situation and that is not a problem for me.

I am not planning to work in Cali straight away, I will be going in December/ January time - I may stay longer while I am there, for up to a year but I am undecided as yet.

I am married to a Colombian and have been for the past 7 years and have relevant experience and qualifications etc.

Do you have colombian nationality? Cedula etc as well?

A couple of friends of mine have worked in Cali teaching and they have no family over there, they are in france at the moment but I will ask them what they did to get their work visa's.

While I was there some my friends mother's offered me work as a teacher to their younger children but I am more interested in working for an insitution etc and ideally like part time hours but not sure about how common that is....

Thanks for your help and info..

No, I am an American. Honestly, I think its better to set up your own Institute. I do very well with my private lessons. I have conversation classes with the college students who are studying English. I also have basic to advance classes. I have little to no time at all but I make an extra 600,000 to 800,000 pesos a month. Just something to think about. Its easy, make up fliers and hand them out. It is a hustle at first but the students will come. oh, being married to a Colombian helps, but you need to file for temp. residency visa. Not sure if you actually have to be living here. I never asked because I live here. Suerte
