CALI/BOGOTA SCHOOLS THAT TEACH SPANISH; PLEASE HELP.

I speak about 8 phrases in espanol. I need to learn. The truest way to learn is to submerge yourself in the dialect. I am moving to Colombia to either Cali or Bogota but I also want to attend school to learn Spanish. Plus since I'm there "fulltime" work is basically out of the question so my school will be my "job" until I can speak enough Spanish to open a nightclub, restaurant or something of applicable value.

Can anyone here give me verifiable info about specific schools that offer Spanish classes? How much is each class and is it set up like American college say 12 credit hours and M-W-F from 9am-1pm?

schools that teach spanish try www.nuevalengua.com in Bogota. They are at the Universidad de la Sabana. It is the most beautiful campus I have ever been to. I took courses there for a week. The professors were very accommodating and professional. As there were no other students at my level, I ended up having private lessons the whole time. The cultural activities component of the program did need a little fine tuning. If you have any questions e mail me at dnits123 at telus.net.

$2200 learn basic spanish? I Have gone to the Nuevalengua website which has a link to translate to English.

Am I reading correctly that the University is $150 USA Dollars per week for a 15 hour class? Is this for real? I am going to Colombia and renting a 1 bedroom apartment with 80 sq. m (850 sq. ft) for $40/month. I can live for $300/month including everything and a school wants to charge $150/week for a Spanish class? 17 weeks is about $2200 for basic class. You have 7-levels for fluency; do the math. No Way!

If this is correct, what other alternatives are there in a class form?

It's also way out of town You should look into Andes and Javeriana. They're both considerably less expensive per class hour and they're located in fun parts of town.

Locate the schools... ANDES AND JAVERIANA.

How do I locates these places and are they in Cali or Bogota? Websites?

Considerably less expensive is how much less expensive?

Yes, I can hire a personal tutor considering the average salary is $150-$200/month and that person would probably be happy to not only teach me but tour the area's around town at my expense and I'm still WAY ahead of the game compared to $150/week for a 15 hour class. The problem is, I need to be in a class enviornment and it's how I learn best. Plus I'm not working down there and I'm going to "need something to do". At last, I will hire a tutor and not attend school if the costs continue to come back beyond belief. $150/week for Spanish School in Colombia is more than if I attended my local college here in America.

I just enrolled in my first Spanish class here in America at the local High School that has adult education for $40 for a 20-hour class that lasts 10 weeks. Barnes and Nobel's and some spanish cd programs is starting to look very viable.

So if you all have something fee based that is reasonable, I'm absolutely open such suggestions/information in Colombia.

English classes Hi,

Both are in Bogota:

La Pontificia Universidad Javeriana - http://sparta.javeriana.edu.co/
La Universidad de los Andes - http://www.uniandes.edu.co/

Both are really good universities. Another one in Bogota that has been doing Spanish classes for years and is excellent is La Universidad Externado de Colombia - http://www.uexternado.edu.co/

Let me tell you about the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (www.unal.edu.co/) This is a public university that has long been considered one of the best in South America. It has campuses all over Colombia, with the main one in Bogota. People study there on the basis of their academic acheivement, not their wealth. It is a very interesting university, with a main square with a huge mural of Che Guevara, the campus is huge, with horses wandering about the place! (The vet school lets them wander around and they sometimes steal your lunch!) It's a large university with many students, and the walls are covered with Socialist and feminist graffitti. It's a lively student scene, with free cinema showings and lots of live music and theatre just out in the park. They do excellent, cheap Spanish classes there, and I know that many foreigners go there to learn Spanish and love it, I've seen them and spoken to them myself.

So why am I going to all this trouble to describe it? Well, because many people woud try to tell you it's dangerous because of the clashes with the police and army. And yes there are, but this will only affect you if you are in the front line throwing things at the police!! Otherwise it's very easy to stay away on the rare occasions that these flare up.

The added advantage of the is that it's more of a real Colombian experience. The three universities above are very good and beautiful, but they look like any American university and the students are all middle/upper class.

What I'm saying is, if you , refuse to believe that it's easy to avoid the odd student demonstration (or that it can even be interesting to watch from a distance), or take offence at Socialist graffitti, the Nacional is not for you. But if you want a REAL Colombian experience in the university that Gabriel Garcia Marquez studied in, go for it!! You won't regret it!

Ok, so maybe I'm biased, after all my husband and sister-in-law both studied there, and I got married in the campus chapel, but it is the most amazing university I think I've ever seen! The only thing is, things move SLOWLY there when it comes to paperwork, so much patience is needed. I don't know how much the classes are but I know they'll be very cheap.

One other thing, don't take private classes - why miss out on the opportunity to meet people and learn in an interactive environment. You'll learn so much faster. Good luck with your search!

THANK YOU SHAZCAS. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU and once more; THANK YOU. EXCELLENT post.

Taken into account when someone asks me a question pertaining to American and coming here from never even knowing what's it's like, try to elaborate as much relevant info as possible. You have just done this for me. See how easy this is folks.

U4TSAF2, maybe you don't mean it like this but... Your post comes off as very inconsiderate. This is a message board, not a research service. It's nobody else's duty to do your homework to your liking.

U4TSAF2 says on Jun 22, 2004, 14:39:

MR. HOLLYWOOD That is your problem not mine. People like you are the EXACT reason I'm leaving America. You need to learn why the message board is here and quit taking exception to yourself when nothing was directed at you. I don't recall saying "Hey Hollywood, your post was stupid" nor did I direct anything at you.

So now you keep being a stupid American and continue to give me good reason to leave America, live in another country where people don't make excpetions for themselves and jump into topics that have not a single reference to them in it.

So I await your American reply since I've now hurt your ego and people like you feed off a Tabloids society.

Learning Spanish in Bogota I went to Los Andes and High Technology in Learning in Bogota. Los Andes would be good if you already knew how to speak Spanish, there was no vocab, just alot of grammar, and if you're on a study abroad program, good luck getting them to give you your transcripts. High Technology in learning doesnt give you much in grammar, but you'll be able to have basic conversations after their first level. HTL will work with your school to give you credits. Javeriana has a good program, but they will never let you know if they will be having classes or not, you must pay in advance and if they dont have classes, you can use your money for a private tutor at very high prices.
I paid about $350 US per quarter at both Los Andes and HTL.
Buy the book 501 Spanish verbs before you go.
Also, I made a friend with someone who didn't speak a word of English and we became roomates. That will really help you learn fast, but not as fast as having a girlfriend/boyfriend who doesnt speak english. Also, invest in a TV, even if you don't understand anything at first, it will help you learn. I used to watch the Simpson in Spanish all the time.
HTL's phone number was 571-616-7270
Los Andes hours were 10-12, HTL's were whatever you wanted, I suggest 4 hours a day and they have classes from 7AM until 9PM
I wouldn't spend money on tutors, just go down to the artist's markets and make some friends, I learned a lot of my Spanish just by making friends in stores, resturants or where ever. Have fun, you'll never want to come back. Billy

Site's in Spanish.. I hope I haven't missed this info in the thread, but do you need to enroll in a class at any of the 3 uni's you mention (and especially your fave) in advance or can it be arranged when you turn up? The site for Universidad Nacional de Colombia is all in spanish and it would take me a long time to interpret with my limited spanish! It would also be nice to check out the options in the flesh!

Thanks in advance!

Mr. Hollywood Don´t be so hard on the guy. If people are daft enough to do all the research for him, who can blame him for not doing it himself? Anyway, no disrespect inteded, but it was only a couple of months ago that I remember you were frantically questioning every aspect about moving to Bogota. And after all, no one forces us to respond to these posts.

Questioning people I was questioning people about many things but I wasn't writing responses to peoples' posts griping at them for not doing my legwork for me. You're right, though. If other people want to spend their precious time doing that, more power to them.
