Cali or Baranquilla?

Which is better to live in- Cali or Baranquilla? It looks is if I may need to make a decision between the two. Any advice?

Depends On what you like, Barranquilla has a beach, Cali doesn't. Barranquilla is hotter than Cali. I prefer Cali, of course.

Cost of living Also, is is much more expensive to live in Baranquilla because it is on the coast than it is to live in Cali? I know all about Cali, but I don't know much about Baranquilla (other than what the typical tourist will tell you). I will be in one of the two for one year.

Beach I love the beach, but I can also visit the beach anytime I want to on a break (vacation). So, it is more based on day to day living than being on the beach for me.

MONEY! OK. Let me be more specific. I have two different positions that are being offered to me. One position pays half of what the other one pays doing the same thing- go figure. Anyways, I know that I will LOVE Cali- no doubts there. So, would I be happier in Baranquilla with more money, or take less money and go to Cali (because money isn't everything, obviously!)

Why do you think the greatest cities in the world are very expensive but pay well, cities as New York City, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, Berlin, Barranquilla, is because those cites are desired by most. If we in Barranquilla had no migration control, the entire damn place would be overrun by cachacos. Of course you will make a lot more money in Barranquilla, who the hell wants to live in Cali. Barranquilla is 3 beautiful cities in one; we got Cartagena and Santa Marta just one hour away. If you don’t mind being in the middle of nowhere in some hot, windless, humid jungle, then Cali is for you. I’m personally grateful to cali, so is Harry, for one thing, it gave us the most beautiful girl in all Colombia, Lauthra.
I’m a extremely honest person and will also tell you that south Barranquilla is considered by most to be a hell hole, I, in the other hand love it, but then again I’m a dumb, crazy, senile old modefoque already shitting on myself. North Barranquilla is beyond words and completely safe from all the stuff you see in cachchaco cities in sur de Colombia.
hey you old modefoque why are you on line this evening? my young pain in the ass wife is in Miami. I'm not allowed to use my lap top at home and if she sees me, i get smack accross the head with a rolled up newspaper, lika a dog.

I'll get there, when I get there!

What to do and where to go.... But I have been to Barranquilla twice in my life time and I don't have any plans on returning in the near future.

I remember the first time I landed in Barranquilla. I walked out of the airport to get a cab and a ten year old kid asked if he could take my bags. I said NO but he grabs one anyway and starts running for the nearest cab so I have to run after him. It was stinking hot out and when I get to the cab the kid demands money. I told him NO. I didn't want you to take my bag but you took it anyway. Then the kid has the nerve to cuss me out. I'm not joking that kid was pissed.

It isn't that people in Cali are nicer and that the people in Barranquilla are meaner. It's that it's so damn hot and humid that they just can't take much.

You know what they say. You can take the sweetest nicest puppy dog in the world, tie it out in the sun, beat it with newspaper and that cute little puppy will turn on you. It's the same with the people from Barranquilla.

Anyway,I suggest that you arrive in the day so that you can enjoy the scenery as you drive from the airport into town. Not only is Barranquilla hot, some parts are a hell hole. I didn't know weather or not roll up the windows on the cab and die from heat stroke or roll them down and deal with the stink.

I actually prefer Cartagena because the night life is as good or better than that of Cali. Monday thru Wedsday nights in Barranquilla are dead or if there was a party I sure couldn't find it. I think they roll up the side walks on those nights.

There is really only one thing that I like about Barranquilla and that is the women. They are second only to caleñas. So if you must go, I suggest that you get yourself a woman from Barranquilla or Cali and then take her to either Cartagena or Santa Marta.

Personally I would take double the money and La Curramba. A visitor's first impression of Barranquilla is a rough one, as you must travel through barrio Soledad to get to the city proper. El Centro is also an eye-opener, with people, taxis, cows and burros sharing the streets and sidewalks. North BAQ is relatively safe and clean; the seafood and local white cheese is great, and after a while, you'll find enough places to hang out and have a good time. I have a barranquillera girlfriend, so any comment I make about the women there might be biased, but it is a fact that city is full of lovely colombianas. With "double the salary" you'll make in La Curramba, you can take trips to Santa Marta, Cartagena, as well as Cali.

I totally agree that south Barranquilla is a hell hole for most, but not me, that’s my playground. For normal people landing in Barranuilla and going thru some of the barrios to get to the other Barranquilla could be quite impressive, but they got barrios in cali were they chase you down with sticks, stones and kitchen knives to take your damn bicycle, in the middle of the day with lots of people around, I saw that in “primer impacto” I was thinking, damn what a freaking ugly hell hole.
My Colombian buddy just got back from Colombian and was in Bogotá, Cali, Medellin and Barranquilla, he’s from Santander. He said that Cali is stagnant; all construction is abandoned, the place is a mess, while Barranquilla has construction at alarming rate and is growing so fast that it will reach Cartagena in no time.
I will grant you that girls from Cali have pretty faces with more of that ethnic Indian look but come on, who’s got better looking and best ass in all Colombia, Barranquilleras. The only problem for some of my gringo buddies except for Miguel and Tone, is not easy landing a Barranquillera, they got really good looking guys and many will tell you to stick your gringo passport up your pasty white ass, they prefer a hot vallenato dancing broke ass Barranquillero.
Dude just look at it this way, if you were offered, for the exact same job, $7.50 an hour in Jacksonville, Florida, and $27.50 an hour in New York City, which city do you think you’ll be happier? The reason Florida pays so little is because it sucks, and new York much more because is the greatest city in the world, well, Barranquilla is the greatest city in Colombia, wait, I’ll go as far as to say the greatest city in South America, I’ll take it one more step, the greatest city south of Manhattan..

I'll get there, when I get there!

I need to apologize, I just check a Colombian map and saw that Cali is a lot closer to the ocean than I imagined, but I had no idea it was so far down south, close to Pasto. How far you are guys from the nearest beach?
The reason I believe Cali stopped growing is that Uribe, under American pressure, has gone after the Cali cartel nearly eliminated them to a point that it has affected Cali in a negative way. Lots of the drug money is now being laundered in the Caribbean coast specially Barranquilla and is one of the main reasons it is now enjoying a construction boom. You have to thank Uribe and the white goody two shoes mafia for that. Those honorable Colombians don’t sell drugs they only steal from the poor, and that's ok.
but what do i know, i only did three years on laundering charges.

not close to Pasto it's a ten-hour drive from Cali to Pasto so I wouldn't call it close. Plus all the guerrilla roadblocks on the way would make the trip longer than eternity.
The nearest beaches are Juanchaco and Ladrilleros (about an hour by boat) from Buenaventura, the trip from Cali to Buenaventura about an hour and a half over the Western Cordillera providing the guerrilla will let you through.
Proud to be able to inform Elmo about the geography of his own country:)

your opinion? Desideria, from what I've read, you lived in Cali. Have you been to Baranquilla? Any advice? Like I said, money isn't everything to me (however, I don't want to be there and be broke either), so is there a reason that I should say, "screw more money," it's worth taking less to be in Cali. Or, is it just as nice in Baranquilla (even though I know they are very different from each other) to say, "hell, yeah, I'll take more money and screw living in Cali." What's your opinion- especially from a foreigner's perspective, since I have read that you are not Colombian.

joyzers I've never been in Barranquilla, so my opinion doesn't really count. Cali is a pleasant, friendly city, more laid back and calmer than Bogotá yet not as loud and boisterous as Barranquilla. It's really a matter of taste: I like the climate of Cali better than the oppressive heat and humidity of the coastal cities like Barranquilla and people from the Caribbean coast tend to be a tad too loud for my taste. As a city, I'd think Cali is nicer and cleaner than Barranquilla (but this is just what I've heard, not first-hand knowledge). I am seriously biased for Cali, since I consider it my second home.

Easy decision, Barranquilla - The economy is better there.
- Many, maybe too many, universities in Barranquilla.
- The quality of life is better there.
- People generally work or go to school in BAQ. Therefore, no partying during the week. Something wrong with that, right? LOL!!!!
- Few tourists, so no rampant price gouging. People are pretty humble, friendly, and helpful.
- Honest taxi drivers
- The women...(oops, you're a lady)...that's a wash
- Weekend partying
- Two other beach cities (Cartagena/Santa Marta) available within 90 mins of your home, when you want to get away.
- Buena Vista Mall in El Norte
- Numerically speaking, Barranquilla is vastly safer than Cali. Isn't Cali currently the most dangerous of larger cities in Colombia? How's that for day-to-day comparisions?

I will say that there are parts of BAQ (including Centro) that are pretty unsafe and downright ugly. I visited one such area last year, even while a power outage occurred around dusk. Nothing crazy happened. And which major city in Colombia doesn't have downright ugly and unsafe parts?

I'll still visit Cali, for the women mostly, but if I had to choose between the 2 cities to live, BAQ wins easily.

Then, I hear that they are offering me double the pay doing the same job, I get nervous. It's like, what wrong with this picture? They want my info. so that they can start my work visa tomorrow. I'm lost. I guess I don't want to be greedy and choose one city over the other just because of money when I would be much happier living in the other. At the end of the day, money only goes so far, even though it sure would give me more peace of mind. Does anyone else have any other things to add about BAQ? Are there any nice areas? If so, what areas?

Joyzers If they are offering you double in BAQ, or in any city in Colombia, apparently, whatever field you are in, they want you or need you. Assuming you're already in Colombia, why not take a trip there and check it out for yourself? What's scary is that there are many Colombian university grads and post-grads there in BAQ.

If safety is your concern in BAQ, stay around or norte of 72. Very lively area, very secure. Plenty of stores, restaurants, bars of all kinds there. Closer to Buena Vista mall, there are better neighborhoods, as the well-off live there. Also, you see the private security folks guarding houses, etc. Some of these folks (incl. my ex's family) kickback funds to cops monthly to get those extra patrols. They are rapidly expanding that area around the mall. The Dann Carlton, I believe, is right across the street from the mall.

I know some girls who live with their family, have had babies, who make about COP$400.000-500.000/month at their jobs, who contribute to the bills of the family, pay for their own bills, and are okay with the setup, and comfortable. They understand that they can't party every weekend, so they aren't frivilous with it. I couldn't live on that, living with my folks or not, but they make do with what they got.

I am a teacher and really like it here. Everyone I have met has been really friendly. I went to the carnival and loads of people asked me where I was from and were really concerned that I was having a good time. I live in the better part of town and have never fely threatened/unsafe. I often go down to the central market and again have not felt threatened, even though I stand out a mile from the locals. I think there are so few outsiders here, people are really pleased you are here as they are concerned with the image Colombia has abroad.
I have not been to Cali,so cannot compare. I am returning to England later on this year and it will be a shock going back to glum, and generally unhelpful people.

joyzers, I plan to move back to Barranquilla so a few weeks ago I went up to some highfaluting neighborhoods looking for a place to buy and settle down. There are so many incredible neighborhoods in north Barranquilla is defficul to decide, so I went to the corner "tienda" for a couple beers which is strange because in fancy areas you now see supermarkets or mini marts gringo style instead of tiendas, but this tienda was there with a bunch of guys sitting outside a few years older than me, very corroncho looking, cheap old shirts, toothless and the few remaining teeth were rotten, they gotta be Colombian retiree, which only means they are serious broke ass modefoques. They were playing domino, drinking cerveza aguila, laughing, and I wondered what the hell are those broke ass corronchos doing around these parts? I sat near them thinking, them is me in the near future, that’s exactly what I want to do, hang out with a bunch of old modefoques playing domino, under a big tree, plenty of shade, telling stories (and I got some stories), jokes and trying to pick up the very young maids going in and outta la tienda, of course I will be the one buying beers and that’s ok thanks to many years working in the good ol USA.
The place where I will be moving to better get used to seeing my ass in front of the building with a cerbeza in my hand and maybe a little boom box and if I’m not down there I’ll be way up in one of my two terraces with a powerful telescope looking into people window while blasting vallenato. I love hanging out in front of the building, is something we low life do here in NYC and something I will continue doing when I get to curramba. Of course when I apply to purchase a fancy apt. I will show my best face and I’m pretty good at fooling people into thinking I got class.

I'll get there, when I get there!

joyzers there's no beach in Barranquilla, no nice beach anyway. The closest beaches are in Cartagena and they are not that nice either.

I still think you should be happier in Cali, even if that meant less money.

Cheers,
Desi

No beach in BAQ? Barranquilla's on the coast, of course there are beaches. Some better than others. Your best options, if you're thinking beach for a gringo, would be El Rodadero outside of Santa Marta (maybe 45 mins away) or Cartagena (maybe 75-90 mins away).

In Barranquilla, Puerto Colombia is the better of the beaches. Not the prettiest beach I've been to, but way more relaxing than Cartagena with all the freaking touts (unless you go to an island).

I've also been to two other beaches in Barranquilla, the exact names escape me now but I believe one was Sabanilla. These beaches are generally frequented by Barranquillero/as. Water was clean, as was the beach. The little cabana set-up were there to shade you from the sun and the availbale table for you to eat. Few tourists to be seen there. As such, no touts, cheap prices for food (fresh fish) and drinks. Pretty relaxing time. Woo-hoo!!!

Rent in Baq roadrunner
You could pay anything from $450,000- $700,000 per month for a decent apartment. In the Prado district you may pay a little less.

Technicality I think Desi is right about BAQ not having a beach, per se, since it is located a few miles from the ocean proper. Yet much closer than Cartagena is Puerto Colombia, and the beach is ok.
