Cali is the american city with the highest homicides number (per capita)

If there's any consolation, Cali was as high as 101 per 100,000 people as recently as 2001, and that's measured across a population of 2.2 million.

(I don't update these figures anymore, but there are a couple of long term charts and tables that might be of interest)

What's the consolation Tinto?
101 * 2,200,000 / 100,000 = 2,222 homicides in 2001
They reported 1,143 until NOW in 2007. Am I missing something?

Robi, this doesn't make sense

Are these the only cities they compared? Because it says that Cali is followed by...and Buenos Aires at 3per, doesn't sound to me like BsAs should be on the list of highest rates. Where is New Orleans on this list? They Have Miami.

Yes, you' re right Billy... I was thinking so even before your post and I am just looking on the Internet if I can find the complete report.
For example, where's Santa Marta, I am sure it must be higher than Cali.

Robi, I know what you're getting at, but is 1143 the count through June, July or mid-August? If it's through July or mid-August and taking into account the drop that typically occurs in December, and some population growth since 2001, you can make the numbers better in comparison to five or six years ago. However, if the count is only through the six months ended in June and the population hasn't changed by much, the rate is going to be about the same.

Yes, heard about that. Some pretty shit. Luckily, people recovered well and left the hospital.
After so many homicides, things should get better soon. Street talk about an agreement between the Mellizos and the Aguilas Negras some weeks ago.
They are charging 2,000 pesos per day to taxi drivers, and collecting vacuna all over the city. And it seems that the last killings are related to refuse to pay by shop owners.
Police and Army are all over, days and night. But those groups are made up of hundreds of people.
So... waiting for someone on PBH to write about being killed just if you are in something dirty... or that they have some friends there who never paid vacunas.

The fact is that the Cities with the highest homicide rates are in the U.S. not Colombia. And the average homicide rate/100,000 is higher in the U.S. than it is here in Colombia.

That does not include the massacre thats going on in Iraq

Tinto (Moderator) says on Aug 30, 2007, 13:01:

That's a relatively meaningless apples and oranges comparison because of the way "city" is defined in Ray's list vs. "city" defined by U.S. Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Compare Detroit to the worst area of Bogota - that's getting closer to apples and apples

Compare Detroit's SMSA to the ~7 million people in Bogota - that's getting closer to apples and apples.

Compare Colombia's smaller communities with Ray's list - that's getting closer to apples and apples. But I don't think you'd want to crow about that, Arthur, because some of the homicide rates in smaller Colombian cities are up to 400 per 100,000 people. In other words, 8x to 10x worse that the worst inner city ghettos in the U.S.

I agree with tinto. Many of the "worst" cities in the US are smaller cities.
