Cali impressions

Adnrew talks about a typical day in Cali Written by Andrew, May 2000, andrewincali at andinet.com.

Where do I start for the last weeks fun events? Its Sunday dinner and its time to go down the "Keys" for beer, only the Keys is 5000+ miles, on a still night you can smell the red Thai chicken curry here. :-).

shopping in cali

Around the central paradero on the Calle 15 at the San Andresito district is a consumer durables market of video recorders, tv,s , cars audio, ect, the entire spectrum of Japanese/Korean electronic goods. This market is undercover, has villilancia privado`s Videos and CDs for music, software, games for Dreamcast, Nintendo and Sega consoles. ALL types of (pirate) software/music is available for less than £1 on this market; this is where you can buy a tin of CS spray for $2000 pesos, if you feel the necessity.

Very like Halifax flea market but with everything pirated, plastic Pokemon`s are the hot thing of the moment, the Picachew`s that say “picachew” when squeezed are popular at the inevitable “quinentos” ($500 pesos).. In England a pair of football boots by Nike Adidas, puma, or any of the other names is expensive, over here nearly everybody (not the Indians) wears these type of sports clothes for work and play, they are VERY cheap here (I bought Gloria some Adidas football boots for less £10 including 2 sets of screw in different-use studs.

A Manchester united kit is less than £5 for the shirt with your name and number, shorts, socks and shin pads, they aren’t pirate copies, these are made to sell in the shop at old trafford, its just that the factory decided to keep on making them because they can sell them here, I have seen Newcastle, Celtic and Liverpool strips here, fetching gloria a united strip was like taking coal to Newcastle!

druggy based story of last night

That got your attention. I went out with the fella next door and his girlfriend in his car because he knew someone that might sell weed (familiar story), anyway we got to this mates house and he isn’t in but his sister said he was playing pool at the tienda at the end of the next road. We went down there but he had already left with his girlfriend, a cousin playing pool told us, he did not know where to look for them.

A bit cheesed off we drove towards home down Ave Roosevelt, when Mario, the guy from next door, suggested we go for a burger and coffee and to think about the situation (very grave), bit like going into the bramshe for a look-see who goes past, the Shane Wesneys of Cali.

In front of us was a red rag waver, these are people stand outside cafes and restaurants, (in reality their personal piece of street, for many are more or less homeless) anyway, seeing the one in front we pulled in the space the flag waver keeps clear of cars other than the 3 or 4 businesses whose parking spaces are HIS property by the unwritten laws of the streets.

The cafes but usually food do not employ them and if it is a good night some extra money changes hands. When a car pulls in they have a bucket of water and while you are eating/drinking/buying fags they clean the windows, lights and mirrors, the whole car if you ask them, but cleaning the windows is mandatory, tip is usually $500 pesos, the inevitable “quinnientos”, worth about 14pence

We were served by a 20-year-old 4-foot tall, Size 6 gorgeous Indian bird (soltera, sin compromisos) who told us that they only had rice, beans and pork, despite the massive menu pinned up outside that said they had meals from all over the world! Also they had no beer but we could have some lemonade (home made) if we wanted., we had that and the meal, very nice at $5.500 (£1.80p-ish for 3 people)

I sat talking with Mario and his bird about the awful dope situation, when the waitress and incidentally, the sister of the rag waver/car park attendant/window cleaner, (she had been listening to me talking, great buzz when earwiggers can understand me speaking their language), she said "ask my brother, he knows lots of people”, we gave her a good tip and she waved her brother over to talk to us, we spoke to him and he said "yeah, no problem, without doubts", so we drove off with him to behind the Galeria central acerca La Palacio de Judistica”, the central courts in Cali, by day a very busy commercial market of fruit, veg and meat, maybe like a dirty, very dirty Smithfield market (market like Tod, but the area of but full of homeless/junkie’s/solvent`ers/muggers and god knows what else, Gloria will not go there, even in the day-time, that is a yardstick of how bad a district is!.

When we arrived there the market was very dark, (bulbs from streetlights broken or stolen), so we parked 200 yards away on the other side of the busy dual carriageway with the engine running and in first gear, car is an old Vauxhall cavalier 2000 SrI in pretty good nick, probably keep pace with the rover I had.

I gave him a $5000 peso note (£1.70p), told him that we were keeping his T-shirt, red rag and bucket, the T-shirt so we could see if he had any weapons when he came back and to come back alone and in less than 3 minutes or we would be gone and unhappy with him, I also promised him a further $5000 pesos if he was back in less than 2 minutes, told him keep his hands were we could see them and no acrobatics of the kung-fu type because we had a gun (lies).

He was back in less than 1 minute, alone and clearly armed only with his shorts (no shoes) and clutching a rolled paper tube about the size of a roll of Clingfilm (see foto), he gave me the tube and what looked like a roll of cash register paper, in reality a roll of king size "rips", stolen from the cigarette factory for making the "Continental" brand of fags.

We said that we were "made up" with him and we let him back in the car and started driving in the traffic, headed towards home, we asked him where he wanted dropping off, "anywhere" he replied because with his new found wealth he was going home to see his brother and to wait for his sister, talking more I found out that they lived under the market stall of an uncle, Uncle got a security guard free, the 3 got somewhere to sleep.

We told him to buy another tube in 2 weeks and to keep it with him (weed isn’t? against the law?) and when we wanted more we knew where to find him, apologised for the security and suspicion but he understood that well, said goodnight and off he went.

We came home and I borrowed the camera to foto the weed, I weighed it at 115 grams of quality gear that never leaves Colombia and the world never gets to smoke (pity). The real cost of the weed....$800 pesos (£0.24p) twenty four pence! there is not a social security here and no welfare/dole, so always have a bit of consideration for the people you meet if you come here.

crime

Most of the alleged street crime and murders is over the right to that piece of street and "his" businesses. The better areas usually have better tips and more of them from the wealthier clientes, Sometimes a challenger and perhaps his friends come along to claim it as their "turf" and sole rights to work it, “rent” it out or “tax” the occupier.

Usually he/they are armed, prepared to fight to the death for the “turf”. Some challengers may be on drugs like Bazourca, the chemical residue of crack/heroin production, worse are the “glue-people, usually with a bottle of Evo-stik brown/yellow contact adhesive in one hand and in a vile state staggering in the road or footpath, being any near this sort is very dangerous in all situations because they are so far gone they are just a walking chemical tank, by rights the amount of solvent these go through in a day, usually more the 3 litres a day, they are so fucked up that even if they stopped, , the amount of brain damage/nasal/lung diseases they already have, most would die in months anyway.

Cross the road, get on a bus go anywhere that is the other way if you have attracted their attention, if you cross the road and its clear that you are going to be bothered by them run like mad and keep your eyes open for anything that will knock them down, but only as a last resort. Cylinders of Mace/CS spray are easily available and perhaps best carried if you want to experience some street life.

Tips, always go out with someone, male of female, Colombian women are usually quite unafraid of anyone. Many women play football at the weekends for money bets (apuestas) and fights between the players of opposing teams are not unknown.

I lived in Cali for 12 years By jennifer 2002-02-21
hi, i am a canadian who lived in Cali for 12 years! yeah, it's true!!
To tell you the truth, I wouldn't advise anyone who looks like a foreigner (blonde hair, blue eyes, tall hahah) to travel alone. you can be the toughest man in the world but one thing colombians know how to do is SCAM and they are VERY good. If they hear you speak spanish with an accent, they will pretend to be your friends, get you drunk or drug you with something called "escopolamina" which is very popular there and it makes you completely submissive, waking up later to realize that you willingly gave them your money, your passport, your camera etc.
I'm not saying colombia is a bad place, it's great!! great weather, great party scene, just try to meet a friend (preferibly colombian) and stick to them.
If you have any more questions you can always contact me at

you're in for fun

Night life By Davysue, at yahoo, none, colombien_Kid at yahoo.com 2002-03-14
i live in london as a kid and moved back to my home country (cali colombia) at the age of 17.
yes cali can be dangerous but only if you go to the wrong places, but as most of you go for holiday, you will be mainly spending time in tourist places like chipichape in the north and unicentro in the south (this are both shooping malls)this places are not dangerous and they both have a lot of security so that you dont have nothing to worrie about.
if you are going night clubing i recomend la avenida sexta than juanchito, even though junchito is more traditional true salsa night clubs its also a bit more dangerous so for safety go to avenida sexta which has excellent night clubs, i recommend las cascadas de la sexta, las brisas de la sexta and tropical which has some great cocktails.
if you are more into trance a very good night club is mission situated to the north of cali.
also i recomend going to kilometro 18 which is 20 from cali, it is a long sort of road up a hill which has restaurant night clubs and more (go in a big group around 7+) when you rich the top buy some aguapanela con queso or chocolate con queso, which are to very delicious hot drinks.
(wear a jumper because it gets very cold up there)

Half Colombian, half Swedish By Margarita, margaritapj at hotmail.com 2002-05-29
Hi! I'm a 20 years old half Swedish, half Colombian girl, who lives in Sweden. My mother is from Colombia, and we've lived there when I was a little, girl. Nowadays we try to travel to Colombia to visit our family every time we can (that is every 4th year if we are lucky and have saved enough money...) I just LOVE Colombia, it's the paradise on earth. Ok, they have much problems with the gerilla and so on, but if you have a friend who lives there and who knows where you can go and where you shouldn't go, then you won't notice a thing of those problems, you'll just enjoy this beautiful place with the beautiful people! I really wish I could travel to Colombia more often, I miss it so much. Colombia is my second home, and will always have a BIG place in my heart, no matter what problems there are there.

A typical day in London By caliche 2002-10-27
I would like to address my comments to Andrew and to tell him that Cali is not Just what he experience there, Cali is a city with history, surrounding by mountains, incredible rivers, good weather, good food, cheap, happy and very warm people, I know few bad things happen there, but nothing compared to the atrocities that we could encounter in other big cities in Europe, I'am a Colombian (from Cali)living in London for many years and I love living here, I have never wanted to mention anything bad about England, But, people like this guy makes me sick, let me tell you Andrew if you really want me I could write an article that will illustrate "My Day in London" and I could mention the number of crimes that occurs in Brixton, Peckham, Harlesden everyday, and all the robberies that happen at daylight in Oxford Circus, Picadilly etc. I usually forgot to mention about the few Scums that you find on the street in London trying to sell innocent people fake perfumes for less than a Tenner which only contains water, what about the pickpockets that act in the tube etc. Could you please tell me how safe is to go to areas like these at night? how about your hooligans when they start chanting obscenities to people, What about the BNP. so now tell me what makes London different to Cali?

yours,
A native from Cali.

Cali By Wendy, todowendy at tomytechno.com 2002-12-07
I live in Cali and im so happy to be colombian. i love my country and specially my city. Cali has many places to visit, if you like to see architecture you will find beautiful places to visit, if you like the mountains and rivers, you will find nice rivers to go, if you like the party and beautiful women you just have to go out one weekend night and thats it. I highly recommend Cali, Medellin, Bogota and Santa Marta, especially PNN Tayrona. this last one is my favorite place here.
if someone is coming just let me know, i will be happy to show you around. I`m studing hospitality and tourism, thats why i enjoy doing this stuff. the other day i was in the airport, i was just arriving from santa marta and i saw 2 amercian guys (blond, tall) trying to make a phone call. thay seem to have problems, so i approched and asked if the need help. they didnt speak weel spanish so i was like fall from heaven. we became friends and i showed them the city, the night life, the surroundings...etc. they tall me that it seems that i enjoyed doing this because i didnt ask for money or something like that. in that moment i realized that i did choose my career weel.
I will love to show you around so if you are coming to cali, just let me know.

The general consensus here seems to be that Colombia IS A beautiful place! Despite it's problems. If you lived in a foreign country, and all you heard about the United States was the gang violence, the Oklahoma City bombing, Columbine, the bombing at the Olympics in Atlanta, school kids killing teachers AND fellow classmates because they were "angry", the FIRST World Trade Center Bombing, European tourists being murdered in Miami for money, 9/11, and so on and so forth, would you visit? As far as muggings and robberies, they occur in every city in the world. Including the "wonderful" US of A! I can honestly say that I have never met anyone that has visited Colombia and disliked it. All the ignorant comments come from the people that have never even been there, but feel the need to make uneducated commentary. Go to Colombia, and enjoy the culture, the art, the poetry, the literature, the music, and the HUMOR of Colombians. They will mesmerize you. Go without prejudices and I guarantee you will have the time of your life! Remember, the Colombians that leave Colombia, don't leave because they dislike it. They leave because there are no jobs. Remember the saying "don't knock it 'til you've tried it" If you visit, I guarantee within 2 years you'll be back.

Things about Cali By diana, hernandezdiana at yahoo.com 2003-01-03
well I have to tell you that I am totally calena and colombian and I have to say that now with this goverment I feel more secure in my city, of course you have to be careful but you see more cops and military people around.
what we have new, well if you come here for tourism you will find few places to go like the San Antonio Church that every sunday has like a handcraft festival and the view of cali is really nice, try to go by day and there is a police post at the begginning of the church, is a pretty colonial site, also has a grea view of cali, the other place is the Sebastian the Belalcazar Statue, is in a good neighborhood and everytime I went there i saw cops, but doesn´t have a good fame to be totally secure so go by day and get a good pictures of my beautiful city, besides that you can go to the ZOO that is one of the best in south america, is really peaceful, well the smell is not the best in all parts but I like it really much, also you can go to the Gold Museum at the Banco de la Republica building, I have not been there but you will see some examples of our gold native handcraft, besides that we have the merced church that is a colonial church, you can walk in downtown but you have to be really careful because they are some areas not safe at all, if you want to go out of our city, well there is some parks outside our deparment or state, if you have a friend ask them to go to panaca or coffee park the first one is about native animals and isr eally great and the second one is about coffee if not you can go to promotora de turismo that have trips to there, I took them and they are not expensive, and have lunch incluide it is not high tourism but is pretty good, i went there only a few weeks ago and besides that i visited another towns near armenia and everything was good about security and the view is amazing mountains and coffee plantations.
I was looking for hotels for a friends and I found one that is pretty nice, clean and really near the zona rosa of cali the name is casa del portal the price are not that bad and is clean, i do not have any business with them but if you want to get in contact with them is hotelcportal at telesat.com.co, also if you want to go to an elegant one go to the intercontinental, I know everybody think is too expensive but is pretty good is the best one, if you need help in that one maybe I can find you a good price, I like to help not doing for business, another one is plaza versalles is not that cheap but maybe you can get in contact is in the middle of the inter and the hotelportal is call Plaza Versalles the email is hotleplazaversalles at hotmail.com,hope this information will help you have a great trip

BOMBING IN CALI SUMMER OF 2002 I would like information about the bombing that occurred in late spring or early summer in Cali. Someone very close to us was in Columbia, playing for their soccer team when his village (Cali) was bombed. To make a long story short, he ran for his life. Although he had his papers, he couldn't get out of the country because he was told that he looked and talked too Spanish to be an American. Eventually he was thrown in jail where he remained for three days, kept naked and in the dark, and was beaten. He ended up in a hospital where drugs were forced on him, before he ever got out of the country. Back in the states less than a month, he developed a brain tumor, doctors, surgeons and specialists said the tumor was a result of the beatings he sustained in Columbia. The brain surgery went well, but he was never the same. He went to California to finish his last year of college. On Christmas Day we received a phone call telling us that he was dead - he had jumped off the 16th floor of a building on Christmas Eve. His 15 year old sister's birthday is today. We are devastated beyond words or belief.

Where can we get info on Cali and the above mentioned bombing?

Thank you.

Que Alegria Encontrarlos I am Mark from Sussex in England. I went to Colegio Bolivar in Cali from 1961 to 1966 and then went to school & university in England from 1966 till 1973 but during those years went back to Cali for the Christmas and summer holidays.

In 1961 La Violencia had only ended about 3 years earlier. I was very blond and fair skinned but in all the time that I spent in Cali I was never attacked or threatened at all. I lived in Versailles, Santa Rosa and then Santa Rita. I sometimes used taxis but more often used buses ( I was there when the the new bus company blanco y negro started). Somebody mentioned the dis-used train station near the city centre. I can't remember any other train station other than the one in Versailles. Is that not used any more ?

Unfortunately, I have to go out now but I will log-in as soon as possible again to tell more of my memories of Cali.

The first thing many new people would call me was Mono perico, hence my log-in name.

Hasta luego.

Life in Cali Hi

I have been living in Cali for the last month and a half and I have to say that I love it here! The city is beautiful and I feel very safe. Though I should mention I live with friends and go everyone where with Colombians. So its a different experience from a tourist who doesnt know anyone.

I think like in any foreign city, you must always be aware of your surroundings. Cali is a BEAUTIFUL city. The mountains are just so pretty. The river at Pance. Everything about here I just adore.

I will return again and again!

I am hoping to move to Cali for about 6 months to teach English. Carlos, I agree with your comments about violence in the States. I grew up in Los Angeles, California, and I have felt more unsafe there than I've felt in El Salvador, Cambodia, and other so-called "dangerous" places. One time I came back from a trip to Mexico only to find that I could not return to my apartment because the three blocks surrounding it (including the 405 freeway onramp) were closed off with police tape and surrounded by SWAT officers - they were chasing an armed robber (and this was in the San Fernando Valley, not some gang-infested ghetto). Another time I was going to visit my friend at night, and was planning to walk to her house which was about one block away, but she refused to let me come over unless I DROVE there in my car because she was afraid I might get mugged or raped on my five-minute walk over there.
Anyways, I have read some posts by people who seem to think life in the States is just wonderful, but it can actually be quite unsafe, especially in the big cities. I think most cities in the world can be dangerous, you just need to take precautions about going out at night, etc.

Gadianton says on Jan 1, 2006, 23:39:

Gadianton Peter, that is [amongst] the biggest crock of shit I've ever read on this site. I've got nothing but respect for the people of Cali but let's be frank here. You said "so now tell me what makes London different to Cali?"

2004 murders:

London (Pop. 7.3m) 192
Cali (Pop. 2.8m) 2,402

So much for Brixton, Tottenham, Harlesden or Peckham. By all means defend Cali but at least be honest about it.

Also I've been to L.A. and El Salvador and the Central American nation is far more dangerous. It has far worse murder statistics so I don't know what the previous poster was talking about. I was woken by gunfire several times (as I have been in Colombia), while on my many trips to L.A. I've yet to hear a single gunshot. The violence is so tame and mundane in Los Angeles.

Why are people always criticizing America for crime yet making far more dangerous countries (like Colombia, El Salvador etc.) seem miraculously safe in comparison?? Hmmm.......more than mere coincidence I suspect.

Going back to London, how come I've lived a significant portion of my life in the city and not heard a single pop of gunfire. Remarkable huh? And I walk around everywhere at all hours without any problems.
