Cali Hotels

Looks like I'll be returning to Cali at the end of September. My favorite hotel in Cali has raised its rates again, and $90 per night is just too high, considering that the many more inexpensive alternatives. Has anyone used the following website for reservations?

http://www.reservashoteleras.com.co

I’m used to staying in the north of town, but some of the hotels at this site with the best prices seem to be south of the Rio Cali. Does anyone have any first-hand information about the following hotels?

Hotel San Fernando Real, Clle 5 B1 #36-40 ($51 per night) This one is right beside a big football stadium, towards the south. If it’s the stadium I’m thinking of, its not too far south. What is the area like after dark? How is the hotel?

Hotel Torre de Cali, Ave Americas 18N-16 ($51 per night) This is the tall sucker you can see for blocks. How is the inside?

Hotel Obelisco, Ave Colombia No. 4 Oeste - 49 ($56 per night) This appears to be near the Intercontinental and the Dann Norte? It that correct? How is the hotel?

Hotel Turistico la Luna, Autopisa Sur #13-01 ($21 per night) The price scares me, and I have no idea where it’s located. How is the neighborhood? Is the hotel a dump?

Good post I've also been looking at the Hotel Luna. I've asked a friend and she said she would not recommend it, but the place looks nice and offers a lot of amenities. If anyone can give us some advice, it would be appreciated.

I've found the following website helpful also,

La Luna is probably ok, I've just been in their pool. The neighborhood is a bit dodgy, though.

P.S. Also, a question. Why are hotels so expensive? You could get a decent room in the states for these prices, how do Colombians(or others from lower cost of living countries) afford to stay in these hotels for $60 a night or more? Are the hotels' sole clientele from tourists then?

JH..Regarding prices.. Top of line 5 star hotel in COL is quite exp(not $500/night like US)..
The real bargains i that i see when i stay in COL is the 3 1/2 to 4 star types. These are the one that is the in the good/safe neighborhood, no guest fees, w/ security, A/C, hot water, sometimes they are suites. In Cali I've stayed at Aparta Real Hotel(think embassy suite or hilton in US) for 100k peso/night for a suite or 90k peso/night for NYC hilton type room located walking distances from avienda sexta. In Bogota i stayed at Real 97 aparta hotel for 95k/night for a suite(kitchen/livingroom/etc.,) in zona rosa.

However, if you're only using US search engine(travelocity, expedia, etc.,) you'll never find those type of places, because they don't get listed. I've discovered them by reading forum like this..

I see Thanks, caslug. I guess in comparison to some of the larger U.S. cities, the prices are probably reasonable. Here in Iowa(try to keep the laughter to a minimum) the cost of living is somewhat lower.

Desi, "a bit dodgy"? Too dodgy for a guero like me or not too bad if you keep an eye out? I plan on finding an apartment while down there, so won't need to stay more than a couple of days at la luna. Thanks again.

recommendation if it's your first time jh.. Pick on of the $50-80 USD/night for 2 or 3 nights, THEN when you're there hire a taxi $15k-20k peso/hr to take you to bunch of hotels, go in talk with them. I always ask the following:

A/C, room safety box, security, guest policy, & of course price? Then if it's in my budget and location i ask to see the room. If you are staying 5 or 7 days or more, you can negociate a better rate at 10% discount.

My first time in Cali&COL, i stayed at a marriage agency condo in N. Cali for $35USD/night for a 3 bed condo to myself. I've moved out after 3 days, because it had no A/C. Hotel occupancy in Cali(maybe all COL) is RARELY FULL so it's a buyer's market. In Cali try to stay on the Ave. Sexta side of the River. The other side of the River is dodge ESPECIALLY at night, around ave. sexta you can walk a night w/o problems. i don't know about S. Cali. But most of the nightlife is around ave. sexta. From ave. sexta to N. or S Cali is only 20-30 minutes anyway.

Hotels in Cali Anyone traveling to Cali should check out Cali Plaza; (Some information here copied from Cali Plaza website: www.CaliPlaza.com. Cali Plaza is an Apartment/Condominium building with Rental Suites. It is American Owned and one of the most convenient locations in Cali:
Over 50 Restaurants, Bars, and Discotecs within walking distance. 3 ATM’s within 1/2 block. Travel Agencies, Grocery and Convenience Stores, and Laundries nearby. Almost everything you need within walking distance. Cali Plaza is ideally located in the middle of the Tourist and Entertainment District of Sixth Avenue in Cali, ...also located a few blocks from Downtown and Business District. (Check out their photo section at CaliPlaza.com and you can view the rooms and see the convenience of their location.) The website is in English.

Most everyone visiting Cali, visits Sixth Avenue; ... Staying in the middle of this area is convenient, plus saves time and money spent on transportation.

Cali Plaza Administrator and Owner both speak English, therefore many Americans hang out there. ... For any of you wanting marriage visas or information, Gonzalo Services is also located in Cali Plaza. They do more visas in Cali, than anyone else.
