Calbagata and Friends

Well I just got back from Cali and it was a very interesting and enjoyable trip to say the least. I would like to brag about how dangerous it was and how I bearly made it out alive but the only thing that got stolen was my heart.

I do think I met one of Desi's friends. I didn't really think that they existed but sure enough I found one. I met this forty something year old woman while I was sitting having a beer at Regge y Pop. She asked me to move over one stool so she and her nephew could sit together at the bar. She spoke good english and her nephew was a 22 year old guy who hadn't been to Colombia in 14 years. He is about to graduate from college and believe it or not was looking for a colombian girlfriend to meet and eventually get married. It appears even well to do Colombianos come back to Cali to find a bride.

Anyway I told the guy that he was in the right place. I told him that I hadn't been in town a week and had found myself a new 19 year old girlfriend. Desi's friend seemed shocked. She says " you mean you met a girl that is a friend" and I told her that, that wasn't exactly how I would describe her. I told her that she was my girlfriend in every sense of the word. She told me that I didn't know what I was doing and that I should know a girls family and where she lives before you get involved with a girl. She also told me that since I was forty two and she was nineteen that the relationship didn't have a chance to last. I told her I'm not worried about it. I told her I'm american and we believe in serial monogamy. Both of my parents where married five times believe it or not.

She asked me why don't you at least go out with a woman that is 25 so the relationship has a chance. I told her that I'm not looking to increase my odds on longevity in a relationship. I told her that I plan on bring one more caleña to the states before I start living part time in Cali and I think that young beautiful women have so much more to gain by coming to the states than an older woman.

Well that is the way I justify it to myself anyway. I'm sure some of you will still think of me as a dirty old geezer. hehehe!!

Well you should have heard the crap that she was laying on her nephew. About how he should met a girl from an up scale barrio and that comes from a good and respected family. She was worried about him going to a concert that only had 40,000 peso admission fee because she thought there might be some trouble with low class people. So she had bougth him tickets to a concert that cost 100,000 pesos.

I couldn't believe it. I told her that I went to the free concerts that they have on Colombia's independence day and met a hell of a lot of nice people there. I told the young guy that if he listens to his aunt he is probably going to have trouble finding a grilfriend in the month that he planned on spending in Cali. I told him that he comes from a relatively classless society in the States compared to Colomibia and that he should take advantage of it. I told him to concentrate on the person and not on what economic level they are at.

I told him that poorer colombians are different and that they have diffent view of the world. They feel grateful instead of intitled for everything they recieve in life. Then his aunt chimmed in "you know if I feel like going out and having shrimp, I just go and do it; I don't have to wait for a guy to take me out". Bing Go! This is when I knew I was talking to Desi's friend. I told her but surely you realize that 80% of the female population in Cali is waiting for a guy to ask them out to dinner.

I'm going to try and explain the differences between americans and the average colombian in a very analytical and over simplified way that really is an insult to colombianos but it is probably the only way some of you are going to get it.

I had a conversation with my caleña wife at the time. I asked her if she really believed that she loved her mother more than I loved mine because she called her mother everyday and I only called mine once or twice a week and visted her about once a month eventhough we lived in the same city. She told me "yes" that she believed she loved not only her mother more but her entire family more. She told me that she didn't believe that americans loved their families as much because they don't take the time to spend every chance they can together.

I told her she was crazy that amercians do love thier families just as much as Colombianos. They just don't need them as much. I told her that in Colombia your family is your social net and that in the States we don't need each others help as much. I told her that spending every holiday with your family was really a survival mechanism. Well she told me that I was crazy. I think I'm rigth but I do believe that my ex-wife really does believe she loves here family more.

Where the hell am I going with all this? Well I tell you that with the social and economic make up of colombia, that women really, really do need a man in their lives more that american women do. But, if you ask (almost) any caleña they will tell you that they love men more than americanas and you know they might be right.

A capitol letter goes after a period, exclamation mark, colon question mark. It’s called a new sentence.
Full-stops only have 3 periods. They might not be as terrible as using two t's in writing, but oh well. He may also want to check your composition.
So when you can speak spanish, or english for that matter, as good as me, you could give me a go about a single stupid T.

Calipro pictures were the usual, run-of-the mill stuff, the kind that makes gringos leer and drool but don't impress the local guys too much, since the streets are jammed with them.
My untrained eye caught quite a few handsome Caleños in the paisonline galleries. I also noticed how much blonder Caleñas have become since I lived there. I saw may redheads too. Judging from those pics I'd have to say that there are more blondies walking the malls of Cali than those of Stockholm or Helsinki!
