Pelo is common use in Bogotá (dunno bout the rest of Colombia) for hair... on your head, but also anywhere else... If you look at any 'champú' bottle and you'll see they use 'cabello' but people do not say that in Bogotá... I never used the word cabello until I started dating a Mexicana and there was some confusion as to which pelo I was talking about.... don't see it having much to do with class... Just stay away from saying things like 'subir para arriba.. o 'mas mejor' and you'll be 'oquey'..

FYI Colombiaboard, cabello and pelo have both the same meaning, why don't you check the real diccionario?? it depends pn where you are that people identify it as cabello or pelo, the reason i dont like to say cabello is because people want to sound fancier by saying cabello or aplicar or colocar, when pelo, echar and poner are perfectly fine...

A lot of the times ESCUCHAR is the correct one to use, the problem is that many people in the lower estratos never use OIR, therefore, the higher ups associate ESCUCHAR with a low-class lexicon.

The exact same thing happens with COLOCAR vs PONER (overuse of COLOCAR in the lower estratos -- when PONER should be used -- has degraded the word to the 'word hall of shame').

Now I do hate the word cabello; I can't think of a single sentence or context where CABELLO would be a better choice than PELO.

This 'verbal fashion' comes from low stratas. They think that "cabello" sounds more elegant. There are not etiquete rules about it, and both words are accepted. Actually, in Cali I use the word "pelo" as many times I can-when need it-

Màs fe, màs abrazos, màs besos, màs disculpas, màs visitas a nuestros amigos antiguos nos haràn màs plenos cada vez.
