Here in Colombia most people who are shopping for bargains go to the shopping center Los Lagos, where there are many small retailers. I got a great deal at PC Mania in CHia, ask for William and say Mr. Bill sent you

Mr. Bill Somondoco

www.dell.com.co usually has good offers and you get the full warranty
and unlike unilago you know everything is original

What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been

I would go the Dell route too, good offers and great machines that last a long time

Dell might be good for desktops and servers, but for laptops Toshiba is the way to go.

Here is a Dell laptop at work, because of the battery

Amigos de Colombia

At a conference in Japan, a Dell laptop suddenly exploded into flames, and lucky for its owner the fiery blast occurred while the PC was sitting on a table and not in his lap. An onlooker reported that the notebook continued to burn, producing several more explosions over the course of about five minutes.

The model of the offending Dell notebook wasn't mentioned, but since it was of the Windows persuasion, we can now boast that we are unbiased in our reports of fiery laptops, both Mac and PC. It's only a matter of time before something like this happens on an airplane. – Charlie White

I work everyday with my Dell Laptop here in Colombia. I bought it in Australia, and in the last couple of weeks the video card crapped its dacks. Dell Colombia replaced my screen first as they though that was the problem then the video card. Its still under warranty. No problems. If you are using it for business or work and need it running all the time, Id go Dell or Apple.

ColombianoGringo says on Apr 2, 2008, 07:49:

As the article implies, this has happened with various brands of laptops including Macs and other Wintel brands.

It's not really Dell or Apple's fault in all cases. They rely on their battery manufacturers to provide them a consistent product that meets certain specifications. Sometimes the occasional battery will have a fault and cause something like this. It doesn't necessarily speak to the quality of the manufacturer's laptops. However, in the case of certain Mac laptops, I think it was a more consistent problem, so it may have been avoided with better quality control on Apple's part.

I "build" my own PCs as well and I agree that Dell and the others tend to use cheaper parts in their cheaper models than you could get in a custom built PC. However, for most consumers, the convenience and support that a good major manufacturer like Dell can provide outweigh the negatives of cost-saving features like shared memory and "on board" sound and video cards. If higher performance is important to you , you could always get the workstation models which are a bit pricier, but have better components.

webmanco says on Apr 2, 2008, 07:51:

When you buy propietary marks, parts are either hard to find or overprice. Try to replace the power supply of a Dell desktop.

"When you buy propietary marks, parts are either hard to find or overprice."

Not true with desktops, although it can be the case with laptops. The desktop PCs Dell and other "proprietary" brands conform to parts standards and you could easily find generic parts that will fit their PCs. Any Dell or other PC will accept third party add-ons such as hard drives, video cards, memory, etc

I do not agree. Try genery memories on most branded pcs.

Yes but the design of propietary marks sometimes do not allow to put regular power supplies. It is not for free that dell power supply adaptors are sold.

ColombianoGringo says on Apr 2, 2008, 08:01:

Most desktops will use either an AT format (old) or a version of the ATX format when it comes to power supplies. In their cheap lines, most major brands will usually use a power supply that barely meets the needs of the PC. Still, I would be surprised to find a power supply in a big brand PC that didn't conform to ATX or one of the less common standards.

When it comes to a third party unit, it is important to make sure that it well exceeds your expected power requirements based on your particular setup. Also, this is not a place to skimp. It is worth paying extra for a good power supply as many budget units don't consistently perform at their rated power output. Also, the cheaper ones are often noisy as hell.

webmanco says on Apr 2, 2008, 08:04:

"however, if you don't use a proprietary Dell power supply or a Dell to ATX Power Supply Converter with your standard ATX power supply, your computer will not work and damage may occur to the motherboard and/or the standard power supply. "

ColombianoGringo says on Apr 2, 2008, 08:12:

That's pretty screwed about that converter. What model line is that? Home or Workstation? We have some of their workstation line and never saw something stupid like that.

As far as memory, I have never had any memory issues with PCs. Macs are another story. Those things were always picky as hell.

I would try to buy one in the states if I could. You'll save lots of cash.
