The only important thing is that it is environmentally-friendly, efficient. I heard about Honda Eco, heard Auteco is good...

Does Honda service? Yamaha and Suzuki both seem to be out of my price range....what about re-selling? Easy, hard?

webmanco says on Jul 20, 2007, 18:26:

For parts an economy people rather Yamaha DT, Honda parts are a little bit expensive, for environment friendly buy one "4 tiempos".

Motorcycle prices had come down, and there are lots of brands to choose from, maybe you want a scooter.

UM, AKT, Honda, Yamaha, Susuky etc. Motorcycle under 125cc don´t pay taxes, and Motorcycles don´t pay tolls, not pico y placa.

At list of motos sold in Colombia can be found here - http://www.motor.com.co/noticias_precios/precios_revista_motor/precios...
Not all bikes are listed. Harleys are available in Bogota, and Yamaha has more bikes than are on this list.

I haven't owned a bike in about 25 years, but I can see that the Honda ECO may not be a good choice because of its front drum brake. - http://www.honda.com.co/scripts/mostraryauncarro.php?tipo=2&cate=2&veh...

If you are young, skilled, and intelligent, you might want to seriously consider leaving the US now, while you still can.

I bought a 200cc 4 stroke Accuro for 4300,000.00 pesos on promotion. For a few more bucks I got a bike with a better suspension and a bit more power. Good for the occasional potholes you can't avoid and some guts when you need it. Also a bigger motor will last longer due to les stress to do the same as a 125cc. It handles great and is well balanced. With the color of the bike and wearing a vest, it's hard for people to miss me. My wifes uncle is a Yamaha mechanic. He said the motor is very well designed (no chain for cam...), many parts easily replaced... Said it was a good buy.

I keep it polished to the max and it always gets a lot of looks. I have to be cafreful that it doesn't get snatched. It does have an alarm.

Amigos de Colombia
Caracas con 15

In Bogotá you can buy used motorcicles in different places, you need to be careful to whom you buy it from, when buying you need to find out how many times the motorcicly has been repaired, when new they are 0, after the first repairement it goes to .25, then to .50 etc.

You can go and just check prices in two places, Caracas and 15 street, a little bit shadow place but that is where more messengers, bodyguards, police and delivery guys take their motorcycles. Another less shadow place is in Carrera 24 and 65 street near 7 de Agosto, there you could find a better selection of motorcycles. As ususal newspaper is another source for used motorcycles.

mykita, Don screw around with a used bike, you wont know what you are buying or how it has been mistreeted as it probably will have been. I had a used Suzuki 500cc and it was a nightmare. You dont need a big bike here in Colombia they are expensive and it`s hard to find any one who knows how to work on them as they arn`t popular. You can buy a new bike with a warranty for $1,550 to $2,500 US. Honda Yamaha and Suzuki prices ar ususly the highest. I have an AKT 100 cc special that I got from Exito they did all the paperwork and I was able to use my debit card, Sigma 150cc enduro I got new. I am am happy with both of them.

I don't know if it is the Gospel truth, but more than one local (Colombian), said you can't even buy a 2 stroke anymore in Colombia. Everything supposedly is 4 stroke now. The one exception is 50cc dirt bikes. I can't personally confirm if this is true, but I heard this same, consistent information from at least 3 people in Colombia. Of course I am referring to new motorcycles - not used.

Just a thought about motorcycle ACCIDENTS. I had a Harley in the U.S. so I am a pro motorcycle person but would NEVER own one here and this is why.

In the U.S. most cities have very good trauma centers if you have a wreck, here, well NOT SO GOOD if you are seriously hurt. Add to this the way Colombians drive, lack of respect for traffic laws ect and this more than tripples the risk of you getting hurt. And last, it doesnt made any difference who is at fault, when its CAR vs MOTORCYCLE, you always loose.

Just something to think about.

true baq but..I know many riders/drivers who have ridden/driven all their lives without an accident.... myself included (knock on wood)....riding a motorcycle or driving any vehicles is a responsibility ....the problem lies when the rider/driver exceeds the boundaries of the vehicles parameters in certain conditions.....for example riding/driving too fast on a rainy/ wet curve.....don't matter if its a truck, car or a bike you are going to go over the cure and down the cliff...the problem in Colombia is that many many riders /drivers have never had the proper training to ride or drive

Just got back from town and my wife and I saw one accident happen and observed another on the way back. The first one the person on the motorcycle didn't yeild the right a way of the opposing traffic. It looked as if both passengers weren't hurt or hurt to bad. The second one a motorcycle was hit by a car crossing the street. The motorcycle was still pinned under the front of the car. No sign of rider(s). Probably at the hospital.

My wifes kind of shaken up.

She's just now learning how to ride. Last Saturday we went for a ride. She, mostly from lack of experience in looking for hazards, had 3 close calls. None of which were her fault. One bike, one dump truck and one taxi. To add more insult, every one of these people knew they were being jerks too. It's as if they enjoyed it. Sick thinking. And this isn't the first time. One time she was even verbally abused by a woman for being out in public while learning.

Even though I enjoy riding my motorcycle, I'm now re-weighing the pro and cons of having them in the family. They are so popular here. What am I going to do when my stepson and daughter get to the age of wanting one?

Yep, you're so right. She's a little jewel. The pic is about 6 months old. It's a kick to watch her change a bit every day. I'm so lucky to be retired (at least for now) and enjoy a lot of time with her. I'm with her when she awakes in the morning, a little Discoverykids, bath and breakfast. Then maybe a little time infront of the house. In the afternoon, she comes up to our computer/playroom and we listen to childrens songs I have on the computer, play on the computer or some of her so many toys (daddy's a sucker for toys and clothes) for an hour or so. The same is repeated in the evening before a little T.V time in bed. She sleeps in our room in her own very special "Cama Kuna". We're now preparing her own bedroom in "Winnie the Pooh" theme. Wallpaper, curtains, bed frame, comforter, lamp/clock... Pooh.

Lifes great with my "LG" = Little Girl!

VIC, the PROBLEM is the COLOMBIAN DRIVERS. The culture here is SO DIFFERENT with regards to traffic laws. Thew blow through red lights and stop signs at 50mph, drive at night with cars that have no lights, pass on the right, turn right from the left hand lane, drive on wrong side of the road and the list goes on.

Come on over to BARRANQUILLA for a day or two and you will understand what i mean. It has gotten so bad here with people on motorcycles getting killed they have specific streets you cant ride a motorcycle on due to the high death rate.
