buying a license

can I buy a bit of paper that makes it legal for me to bomb around cali on the mini monster, I ride it everyday from the north to the south and back again in the evenings, I'm getting a little aware that maybe I'm bending the law with only my english driving license on board, ¿?

ypu have to go to INTRA (tha´s the legal stuff!) take a test of course in spanish and say what kind of vehicle you wanna drive (the little monstar is a motorbike right?). . .

have an adress, and pay the SOAT (that´s the insurance stuff. It´s mandatory, so there´s no way to avoid it!, and check your engine for emissions, in almost any gas station in colombia can you have that paper.)

good luck on it!.

some sites you can check: (off course in spanish)

http://www.mintransporte.gov.co/

in this site you can check if your license was aproved (if so, your name would be held here, with your cedula de extranjeria number. . .)

http://www.mintransporte.gov.co/online/Consultas/transito/Consulta_licencia.htm

hope it helps.

Yeap. specially in this time of the year. . bribery can let you "off the hook" two or three times. . . but being a "gringo" in cali, it´s easy to spot you. . . just for your accent. And policemen are not the "smart ones" but play dumb it´s dangerous and stupid, specially with armed guys.

camp says
" I am married and live in cali and have a 2 year visa that I need to update when it expires for another 2 years, then I think I get a permanent cedular but I suppose its because I live here."

to me you are deemed a resident in which case you should have a Colombian license.....unless you show a passport when you are stopped....if you show your cedual as ID and an America license and the cop is half smart you should be looking at a pay off or fine

listo

If and when you do get your license, it's permanent. Never need to renew it. Thats a fearsome thought.

Colombia is part of this treaty. IDP (International Driving Permit) is a document where your license is translated into several languages. It is not valid for personal identification, but it migh help locals understand what is writen in your driving liscence.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/spanish/alerts/s-driveralrt.shtm

I have one of these international driver licenses and colombia is a part of the treaty so they have to recognize this license.

I've never had any trouble renting a car in Colombia with only my California license so you're probably good with that.

But in Japan you need the international.

if you're not an american and you want to drive in the states and you have no license whatsoever, then you must apply for the Honduras intl driver license.

Camps....as always with this site, there are more conflicting accounts than the Kennedy shooting.....what i was told is this...first, police said, no problem drive with your UK license...second, Transito told i can drive with my UK license for 6 months only..then you need a Colombian license...how they work out the 6 months rule, i have no idea..i suppose if you own your bike i suppose....anyways I was stopped by Transito and showed them my UK license and that was fine..they were more interested in the papers of the day...

I have all the licenses, registrations.... needed for me and my moto. When stopped, it's a breeze and I'm on my way. Usually they want to ask questions on how and why I like to live here. Just get what's required for the locals here and you will have much less hassle.
