Buying a house. Where to start?

Me and my husband are thinking to buy a house in Colombia-Medellin, right know we live in Canada. We don't know exactly where to start or what kind of documents and arrangements we need to do. Do we need a real state? or can we do it directly from the bank? and also what kind of banks in Medellin can we deal with preferably bilingual?
I really apreciate all the info you can give about buying a house. Thanks
