Buying a Colombian SIM card etc.

So I will be in San Andres and then in Cartagena and then who knows :) So I was thinking I could buy a Colombian SIM card for my GSM phome and avoid ridiculous roaming charges ... in Honduras and Egypt I got a local phone chip and then just bought pay as you go phone cards.

Is this possible in Colombia?

Can I buy a SIM in say, San Andres and have it for the duration of my trip around Colombia?

any info appreciated ... muchas gracias!

Not sure what the coverage is in San Andres, but I bought a SIM chip last year and use it every time I go back. As you said, it is very convenient. I do the sasme thing in St. Kitts and in the Dominican Republic.I bought mine at a cellphone repair tienda but I have heard many persons say that they needed to apply for a chip and needed to provide paperwork i.e. passport etc.

Hope that you like Cartagena, I'm going to be there 5/19-22. This will be my first time there.

I usually just buy a phone inexpensively and then leave it with a relative.

Yes, you can just buy a simcard it will work with any GSM unlocked phone phone. I buy unlocked GSM phones on e-Bay when I am in the USA and they work with all the cell companies in Colombia, though you will have to sign up for the service to get the simcard and they may reqire you to have a Cedula I have not been able to get one with just my passport..

Curramberochris .... What sort of signs and what do they say ... is it "SIM" in Spanish as well?

Mikeinpuerto ... can you let me know where you bought the SIM please? Did you just buy "pay-as-you-go" phone cards from TIGO to make and pay for calls afterwards?

Thank you all!

SIM is called SIM. But pronounced 'seem'.
