Business visa o Temporal visa

Ive been on a Temporal visa for the last year while running my business and now have to reapply for another 2 years.

The temporal visa does allow you to run a business and was easy to get but what are the benefits of the Business visa over the Temporal visa?

and how much harder to get is the business visa?

what other papers do i need?

any advice would be appreciated

Shaun

I was told by the Colombian Consulate in SF, that only the Business Visa allows a foreigner to start a company or open a corporate branch in Colombia. The Temporal is the class of visa, not the visa itself. In the temporal class visas are the student, workers, religious, etc, which do not allow you to open or run a business, but the worker visa allows you to work on a temporary basis. Only the Business Visa allows you to do that. Refer to www.colhouston.org, highlight english and click on Visas. This has more information. The requierments for the BV are also listed there. Hope it helps.

Just my opinion...

thanks Miguel The Temporal visa does allow you to own and run your own business. This is what Ive been using for the past year to run my business. i went to merida requesting the visa for business purposes and showing the camera commercial, DIAN and starting balance of my business.

Didn´t have any problem getting it and my business is restricted in no way other than the fact I need to get ity extended each year.

I was sure if there was any other benefit in getting a business visa

Shaun, i will be picking up my BV next week, and will discreetly ask your question regarding the difference between the two. Also, FYI with a BV you can request a 2-year visa, which they gave me. The first time they only gave me a 1-year visa. You may want to ask if the visa you have in the Temporal category can be granted for 2 years. Check out that website for more information.

Good News And Bad News The good news is that the Colombian Consulate in San Francisco renewed my Colombian Business Visa and gave me two years until I need to renew it again. I picked it up today in SF, and ran some questions by the head Consular in his office regarding visas. He suggested that next time i get the Temporal Work Visa which would allow me to "work" at my company in CTG (where i draw a salary)as opposed to "supervise" my Colombian employees (where i get to keep the profits), and i can get my permanent residence after 2 years, whereas with the Business Visa the permanent residence is not an option.

The bad news is that the only Colombian visa which allows you to start, operate, or open a branch office in Colombia a the Type NE Business Visa. He said no other Colombian visa allows you to start or operate a business there. He further said that by starting or operating a business in Colombia under a Temporal Visa (any one of the 7 visas in that category), the terms of the Visa have been violated, and the Temporal Visa automatically expires, leaving the holder open to deportation. He also told me that many banks, local government offices are not up to speed on the immigration laws of Colombia, and it is possible to start a business in Colombia, however, if it ever became an issue, the visa violation would be enforced. So, I took it to me that its unofficially ok until you get caught or piss off the wrong person there.(????)

He mentioned that the Work Visa (one of the 7 Temporal Visas) only allows a foreigner to work for a Colombian or Foreign company in Colombia, but not own, start, or operate their own company.

Anyway, keep in this mind, as you might want to get the NE Business Visa. The application process is not that much harder to do.

Hope this helps regarding your OP, and take it for whatever it is worth. =)

I know a lot of people owning businesses in Colombia on this visa. When I applyed for the visa in Venezuela I had to prove that I already owned my business ie DIAN, Camera Commercial etc

Im not sure if were getting the same info because this visa has been granted to people I know in Ecuador, Venezuala and Denmark all based on the idea that we have businesses.

A have also been told that I am not able to get residence til after 5 years on a Temporal visa. Its seems everyone has there own version.

I find it hard to believe that I could never get residence if i owned a business here.

Just to make one thing clear, he suggested that you get a work visa to work for the company you own???????

so you can own your own company on a work visa and draw a salary?

send me a reply to my email address if thats ok

He said that you can supervise and open branches of your foreign corp but you can not draw a salary as an employee, which would require a work visa. He said your compensation is drawn outside of Colombia, which is basically true. Which temporal visa do you have out of the 7 listed ones? Maybe the difference is that i have 2 US corporations (based in California) with Colombian based branches (one tourism based, and the other security consulting), where i take it that your businees is a Colombia-registered company? i have the Consulates personal email address and i can write him questions regarding the visa you hold and business ownership.

Regarding the application for the temporal visa, you would have needed a visa which had already authorized you to open the business in Colombia in the first place. Its like putting the cart before the horse, sort of speak. What type of Visa did you have when you opened your company?
