Business Visa Lawyer

I am ready to turn in all of my paperwork for the Business Visa here in Medellin, Colombia. Unfortunately, the lawyer who does the 'tramite" is in Cartagena until maybe the 15th of December but he may be back sooner. To make things worse my tourist visa expires the 27th of December. The secretary at his office said that it would be no problem if I wait until the lawyer comes back and then turn in the paperwork. This makes me nervous because I don't think that it is enough time to get the whole thing done right before Christmas. I am considering finding a different lawyer that is in Medellin. Any words from the wise out there? Should I just wait? Any lawyer recommendations for somebody who has applied for the Business Visa (Negocio) inside the country. Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks, Sebas

You must leave the country to get the business visa............most people go to Panama .......

I sent you a PM with my number.

Why would you go to Panama instead of San Antonio?

Rob......My understanding is that if you apply at a consulate in the States it takes longer. Apparently they ask for police reports and other stuff............Panama is a one day affair.

I was referring to San Antonio, Venezuela, just across the border from Cucuta.

I believe the required documents don't change in what ever country you are applying for the visa...if you have all the required documents lined up in a row ...I would say yes you can most likely get the visa in a day

Main thing to remember is this is NOT a work visa. This is one type of visa that must be applied for and issued outside of Colombia-which country/consulate you pick is your decision.
You would be well advised to contact the consulate you pick and determine what THAT CONSULATE REQUIRES. Also, not knowing your long-range plans, you should know this visa does not lead to permanent residence(see MRE site). Once you get the visa and enter Colombia you have fifteen days to appear at the local DAS office, register, and obtain a Cédula.

And another thing............previously the OP posted questions about obtaining the Rentista Visa......................If by chance he is getting the business visa as a ploy just to stay here because it is easy to get.................remember that if the business visa was given because you " opened " a business here you will be subject to filing taxes even if you do not show any income. This needs an accountant who needs to be paid monthly. Also if you file the tax forms for one year and show no income or visable signs of an actual business...........then the chances of getting the visa re-newed will be interesting........

I only say this because of his previous post on the Rentista visa.............maybe it's not what he's up to at all.

Basically, I work for an export business in the states and I have been hired by this company to show catalogs of products to potential importers in Colombia. A colleague(SIP) of mine applied for and obtained a business VISA in Medellin after entering the country on a stamped tourist VISA. The lawyer apparently did everything but right now I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Maybe I should just go to Panama and apply there for the VISA since everyone is saying that I cannot do so inside the country (even though a co-worker did so) Thanks for your help, any other ideas would be helpful.
Thanks, Sebas

I don't see any reason to rule out San Antonio (Cucuta). The borders are still open. Unless someone thinks it's cheaper to fly to Panama rather than Cucuta.

I was planning on taking a boat to Panama as I will be in Cartagena and Santa Marta just before Christmas, that should be fairly economical and interesting. Going to Panama by boat and applying for VISA's in the city. I have enough paperwork to apply for either the NEGOCIO or the RENTISTA VISA's. How do I found out about the hours and days off at the Panama Embassy/Consulate? If neither of those VISA's that I will apply for don't work (which I'm sure one will) I can try and come back in 2008 on a tourist VISA if the calendar year rule applies(as opposed to the rolling year theory). I understand exactly why Colombians call them Vueltas. Eff' I can't wait to get a decent VISA. Anybody taken the boat from Cartagena to Panama? Thanks for the PM's Sebas

Gator: I have several acquaintances that have applied for and received the NEGOCIO visa while in Medellin, without leaving the country. They simply dropped off their paperwork, signed a form so that someone else could take their passport and the papers to Bogota and everything was back in a week. Is there something shady going on here? Sebas

What kind of visa were they Colombia with? What visas you can use to make application at MRE in Bogotá.

Go for it-what are friends for? If you have an attorney stick with him/her

You might go to MRE's site and take a look at Resolución Numero 0255 de 26 de Enero de 2005, Capitulo lV, Artiículo 5 La Visa de Negocios.

My friends were here on a tourist VISA. By the way, I can't find that resolution. Do you have a direct link? Thanks for the encouragement!
