PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
People have asked for business ideas before. One hit me that isn´t my cup of tea but could be a windall if it´s something you like to do and have some seed money to back it up. I think the key is to be a broker in some shape or form. Why not be a plastic surgery broker? Talk with doctors in Colombia. Ask them what they charge. Ask for a discount in return for sending them business and just like that, you have a business. All the doctors need to do is nip, tuck, close, take what they charge from the broker. You absorb all the advertising costs (google, tahoo, magazines) and charge the client what you want for the surgery. But there are anciliary busnesses you can run off of it too. Create a hotel for foreigners recouperating from plastic surgery complete with nurses, food service, etc. Sell Fajas and those bras with the ice packs that you stick in the freezer. You can do "Heaven & Hell" vacation where one comes & enjoys all the things Colombia has to order before the culmination of experiencing the excruciating post-surgery pain.
Boob job just cost my friend 3.7 millones or about $1800 USD. Even with a bad exchange rate, it´s dirt cheap.
Could be lucrative

Brians says on Apr 27, 2007, 06:21: Great Idea Spig problem is that after ticket price of let's say $500 you are now at $2,300. Then lodging of say $200. Get's you to $2,500. Now say I want to pad it with $750 or $1,000. I am now only saving the person maybe $500 to $1,000 and they have to travel to a country were they can't really have follow ups and there really is no malpractice liability. I think if I were getting a set of bolt-ons I would want to stay closer to home for the marginal monetary gains.

juanalejo says on Apr 27, 2007, 06:45: Spigrimace It must be a good idea as I know there is already plenty of competition in the market. There are quite a few brokers doing just that for Plastic Surgeons and Dentists, many of them have even Doctors in the US and Europe who do the follow up check ups.

Brians says on Apr 27, 2007, 07:40: juanalejo I see it too and has been big in Brazil for years. However with the weak dollar the margins are getting squeezed. I just think that the price differences now make staying in the US for the surgery more attractive. I have a few Plastic Surgeons as clients. They basically can do a breast implant in the $5,000 range. So at $1,600 + $500 ticket + $200 lodging + broker fee of $1,000 (estimate) you are at $3,500 to perform a surgery in a foreign country in which you will have a hard time following up and no real legal recourse in case of accident (which are frequent in Plastic Surgery). I pay the extra $1,500 if I were the average American woman who doesn't know Colombia.

Gator says on Apr 27, 2007, 08:46: Day Late And A Dollar Short... Several firms in the USA, mainly in South Florida, Texas, and several other states, are doing this. The are offering all inclusive packages: doctors fees, hospital costs, hotel, etc. Only thing not included are the air fares. miamimike says on Apr 27, 2007, 08:58: There are several ads here in Miami But the Drawback to these 3rd party Agencies is they add an extremely expensive layer to the surgery while adding nothing of Value to the recipient's overall surgical experience. In many cases, they almost double the cost of surgery while not changing the outcome. I would never recommend one of these agencies to someone intent on getting surgery in Col unless the actual Surgeon or Clinic was the actual person advertising for clients and also that his prices remained the same. I have recommended a Dentist in Bogota, completely free of cost, many PBH posters have used her with great sucess. Cost= "0"$$$$ to the patient commission wise. Someone can find a plastic surgeon the same way, Why not save that Big Commission yourself? Isn't the idea to save some Money when you have Plastic surgery in Colombia? Steer clear of these 3rd party Surgical packages, they aren't necessary. One female poster who posted on her experience here in Bogota came here on one of these Plastic Surgical Travel Packages and the truth be told, after you put the pencil to her surgical costs, she could have had her surgery in South Florida for approx the same price and no airfare to boot. Not to mention her Doctor would have been local should she have any status post surgial complications arise later. "Wait a minute. What did you just say? You're predicting $4-a-gallon gas? As an american citizen, I can have the sh-- sued out of me if anything goes wrong. I myself had a mistake in my surgery here in Bogota which really scared me, ----I could have died.

miamimike says on Apr 27, 2007, 14:01: And again, you really don't need a 3rd party Surgical Agency What Value do they add to the Outcome??,,,Absoltely nothing as the song goes,,, "Wait a minute. miamimike says on Apr 27, 2007, 14:18: When one thinks of a Medical Tourism Agency, it needs to be transparent and completely free with the Info. I have not seen this level of Medical tourism in Colombia as seen in India. Again, in India, the Government actively promotes it where in Colombia it(gov) does not. "Wait a minute. getting better says on Apr 27, 2007, 14:42: Retención en la Fuente There is a nasty tax in Colombia by this name, which really hits any type of agency business hard. It is not a tax on profits or value added, like IBA which is fair tax. I know because I have helped to set up a company to promote birding and wildlife tours in Colombia (see www.ecotours.com.co) and this tax really hits us hard when we arrange things for foreign companies to visit nature reserves in Colombia. There are many taxes in Colombia and I think generally people accept that a high tax is necesary to pay for security, but this particular one is a real problem when you to try to recharge things at a small mark-up, as you end up losing money.
