Buses Medellin -Peru

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has any information on travelling to from Medellin to Peru by bus. I know you can do it but I wanted to see if anyone has done it to see how long, expensive, safe it is (I'm a young lady travelling on her own) etc.

Any tips on what to do and see in Peru would also be good to hear.

Thanks

Hey,

The cheapest way to do it is just to take the domestic buses. The trans-national buses will cost more, and I'm not even sure any leave from Medellin.

It's not unsafe. The bit between Popayan and Pasto you will want to do by day. It will break down like this:

Medellin-Cali: 8 hours, $20
Cali-Ipiales (border town): 8-9 hours: $15-20
Microbus to border point: 30 minutes: $1
Wait at border: 1 hour or less if lucky
Microbus to Tulcan 30 minutes: $1
Tulcan-Quito: 5 hours, $5
Quito to Peruvian border: 12 hours, 12$
Peruvian border to Lima: 20 hours, 20-30$

It's a lot of travel and change, you might want to break it up a bit, but as you can see, about 40-45 hours realistically. And pretty damn cheap, for the distance travelled.

Yeah my quito to lima bit is an estimate, never having done it myself. I've done Medellin-Quito, but refer to Johnny's link for the rest.

Out of interest would it be possible to get a cheap flight to Leticia, walk to caballococha, take a boat down the amazon to iquitos, then get a bus to lima from there?

So 56 hrs. +/- plus lodging costs inbetween unless you can and like to sleep on the buses 56 hrs. straight. My ass would get tired after every 18 hrs. alone.

So how much time would the trans-national buses take and the extra costs maybe could offset the 2-3 nights lodging in-between?

Peru is a gold mine as far as things to see and do Miss J. Might I suggest the Peru section here or even better www.expatperu.com, Lonely Planet etc. to start. So much cool Archealogical stuff Incas and all that. Some places they don't even speak Spanish pure Indian dialects. Neat and very diverse country.

Iquitos is still only a boat/plane destination. Nearest bus/truck is at Yurimaguas (3 days boat), or up the Ucayali to Pucallpa.
