It is safe enough if you are Colombian. On a good trip it's 12 hours.

I have done it several times, too. Night and day. Day is good one time to look around, but i prefer at night. Beware: it will be cold in the bus because of the A/C!

Is the scenery really good? I guess yes.. I will be going from Cali to Medellín through the Coffee Zone by bus which I read has excellent scenery. If the Medellín to Cartagena route is nothing special scenery-wise I will be tempted to take a plane- as I'll be short on time. If anyone has done the two and wants to comment on scenery aspects- please do.

Medellin to the coast. The scenery is good until you reach Puerto Valdivia. Then, it is flat. Interesting for do it once, anyway.

Thanks robi666. Looking at a map it seems to that place is about 1/4 of the distance-ish to Cartagena. I would like to do a long trip by bus for the experience- but hmmm. Tempted to save that one for another time then as I'll be doing some bus travel anyway just before. Thanks again.

Youl'll arrive mith more dust than a "cucaracha de panaderia" (a bakery roach), and stiff as a corpse. The scenery past Puerto Valdivia is dull, just as Robi said. There are much more interesting trips, scenery wise. Medellin Bogota, via Pintada, for example.

I have travelled this route more times than i can remember this year. Day and night. They were just normal journeys. However a Colombian friend who knew i travel this route phoned me 6 weeks ago and informed me that on his night journey to Medellin Cartagena the bus was stopped and robbed .They took whatever goodies they could get hold of and the bus was sent on its way. There were no extranjeros on the bus.I never saw any media coverage of this.Although i am sure the odds of this journey will be safe enough, you can make it 100% if you travel by day.
