Building a house? - any experience of this?

Hello,

I was just wondering if anybody had ever tried to build their own house in Colombia? I would like in the future to move back to Colombia with my Colombian wife either to Santander or Los Llanos. Our dream is to buy some land and to build a finca for the family.

We would like to ideally buy several hundred hectares and try to run a small cattle farm (her dad does this now but on leased land, not his own). On this land we want to build a large farmhouse for all the extended family along with bunkhouse style accommodation either for employees or tourism or both.

I just wondered if anybody has any advice or information about this as I can't ever seem to find just land for sale in Colombia (it always is too small and already has a house on it). I also don't really know about building regulations and particularly land zoning issues. For example, here in the UK it is almost impossible to get planning permission to build anything in a rural area and I wondered what the situation was in Colombia?

So far I have really enjoyed this site, thanks to all the contributers!

I will continue to dream...one day I'll be there too!!

I bought land, a small area (1.5 Hectaria) and built a nice 3 BR house to my design specs. Zoning not a concern. Where I live insulation is not a consideration as there is not much variation. The temp range is 40° to 85° F In Los Llanos you might want to have A/C though. Finding such a big tract of land will be your problem , at least in safe areas. You could find that much near La Macarena, for example but that would not be a safe area.
