"Ospina, a well-known Colombian essayist and poet, debuts as a novelist with this recreation of life in the South American colonies during the 16th-century, a time when the Spanish conquerors’ thirst for gold led to abrupt massacres and chaos. In 1545, Pedro de Ursúa arrives from Spain to the young city of Santa Fe, eager for gold and prepared to gamble his own life for a fortune. There was so much violence in the colonies that the Spanish Crown had to send deputies to control the new-founded territories. Ursúa quickly demonstrates his honor and gets permission to seek the treasure of El Dorado. But this is a world of ever-changing rules, thanks in part to the fact that the Spanish Crown keeps sending new messengers of order, and Ursúa passes from being a brave captain to becoming a slippery bandit. The first part of a trilogy, Ursúa is evidence of Ospina as a novelist. By reconstructing a chaotic time when Colombia hadn’t even been defined as a nation, Ospina calls out to the country’s current state: 'Colombia hasn’t finished its conquest.' Recommended for all collections of Latin American literature and history.—Camilo Hoyos, Barcelona, Spain"
