Bucaramanga to Santa Marta by Car

Hello all - this is my first post, so please be gentle...

We are planning to drive from Bucaramanga to Santa Marta. If I got it right, then driving during the day should be relatively safe.

We would like to stop over for the night somewhere between Bucaramanga and Santa Marta. Any recommendations, tips or insights?

trio if you leave early in the morning you should have no trouble what so ever in making it there in one day.....I have done it in 7.25 hours.... I have made the trip about 4-5 times in the past 4 years....just watch out for the potholesssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Thanks vicshere. We are travelling with a small child, I'm not sure speeding is a good idea... How fast do you drive?

The biggest danger is trucks in Cesar to Magdalena. Just think that they could do the most stupid things, like a slalom to avoid a hole while you overpass. So, do not be afraid to use your horn!
If you meet a long queue of trucks stopped, follow a Colombian car and try to pass: they are waiting for the "bascula" a couple of kms ahead.
You do not have to stop, I make it from Medellin daytime (11 - 14 hours).

anywhere from 1kph to 130kph......only a couple of areas where you can do 130k...I say the average is about 80 kph over the whole trip.....the speeding is not the problem but the pothole.motos, donkeys, people in the middle of the road oh and of course the potholesssssssssssssssssss

Sure, you're right. I've traveled with three kids jumping around in the car and I always spend the same 8 hours.
