My wife and I are going back to visit her family in Bucaramanga for a month next January. As part of our holiday, we are going to go to Cartagena for a week, I was wondering if anybody had ever travelled the road from Bucaramanga - Cartagena?

I know the road goes through Aquachica and I just wondered if it was safe. I have heard that it is either fine, or alternatively others have said it is dangerous - all very confusing really! I would be really grateful for any advice.

At least I am coming back to Colombia after 18 months back in the UK - I can't wait!!!

Ive done it three times on my motocycle, its a great road, smooth sailing and not a second of feeling in danger. Curious as to who told you it was dangerous, expat or Colombian? Ive been riding my moto all over Colombia for almost a year now on and off and I see no difference riding in then the States. In fact I feel safer here as I know that if I have a problem with my moto, 47 people will come out of nowhere to help.

Im not sure what happend but the second time I ended up coming in on a different road then the first. I got lost in BAQ and ended up coming into Cartagena on a coastal road and it was gorgeous and easier to get into town.

If you keep your eyes open no problem...does a little ass scare you?

I`m all the time a little bit scared if I see burros and I don`t know if they are free or not. But you are right, it`s not too much dangerous.

Marly,

some family members told me that Aquachica is a dangerous town. I thought it would be fine if we kept moving. I have done the road from Bucaramanga - Medellin - Armenia and back and it was fine. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Not sure about the danger level of Aquachica. I stayed there for three nights in December due to an injury and felt comfortable walking around at night around my hotel on the main drag. But then again your going to fly right by the town on your trip so no worries....
