Broadband in the sticks

Trying to find out broadband options nr Chiquinquira. No landline (therefore no adsl), no cable, satellite too expensive, no WiMax. On my reckoning that leaves powerline which they were trialling (in Faca I think) and usb 3G dongles (which I don't know if they have in Colombia, or indeed whether Chiquinquira has 3G reception).

Can anyone help?

why don't you stop by an Internet cafe and ask? Oh, that's right, there isn't one. You may be out of luck unless someone in that area can advise-good luck. We tried to book a couple of years ago and had to contact by telephone-none had an e-mail. Try contacting the university-Universidad Pedagogica Y Tecnologica de Colombia (UPTC), located in Tunja and they have a branch in Chiquinquira. I think they extended broadband to their branch there so UPTC might offer some direction..

IFX looks to be for companies and too expensive. I see Tigo has announced that it will launch 3G services before the end of the year. Maybe the usb dongle approach will arrive in Colombia.

when I am in the sticks I use my blackberry curve with its unlimited data plan and get 2.5G (EDGE) of 200kb and 1G (GPRS) of 30K on Tigo/Comcel/Movistar. This is using the international data plan from Tmobile for $19.99/month. Even in the most rural of areas I get some internet (maybe slow, but overnight my email finally downloads)..

While the carriers (Tigo) says they have 3G phones and modems (which they do) they haven't built the infrastructure with the towers supporting 3G data and the internet backbone between the cell sites. Like in the states, when they do roll it out it will be the large, more affluent and populated communities first. So having a 3G phone/modem won't be of any value unless you are on a 3G backbone.

Interesting.....at least we'll know for sure before the end of the year

"Hemos recibido su comunicación vía e-mail del 1 de octubre de 2008, en la cual nos solicita información acerca de los servicios de tercera generación (3G). Por lo anterior, le indicamos que nuestra compañía ofrecerá esta tecnología celular en el segundo semestre del presente año, incluyendo servicios como Videollamadas o Internet móvil; sin embargo, aún no tenemos una fecha exacta en la que entrará en funcionamiento." (from Tigo)

Your T Mobile plan looks unlikely to capable of using Skype, so I'll hold out for 3G and keep my fingers crossed that the rollout is quicker than in the States and UK. At least there is a Tigo mast less than 2km from the house.

I bought a high gain USB antenna/eithernet adapter and take it with me wherever I go. This device features a directional high gain wireless antenna that allows me to pick up wifi signals from almost a mile (line of site) away. It also ignores signals from behind and on the sides (for example, everyone is on channel 6 which is typical). This device allows me to pick up signals from quite a distance and using it is based on the idea that many people leave their wireless network open. So then I can sync up without a problem. This has been worth it's weight in gold and is one of the many things I carry in my backpack..

Unfortunately, there'll be no wifi signals to piggyback on. Happy to wait till Tigo get the mast updated. In Bolivia a 1GB 3G service costs the equivalent of 35.000 pesos/month which seems reasonable - imagine it'll cost roughly the same in Colombia.
