So, I'm about 3 weeks from going to Colombia.... And I've been extremely busy at work and will be in the final stages of a merger when I go to Colombia... I refuse to cancel my trip... Chances are I may need to do a little work.... I have a wireless connection on my laptop, so, right now I can work from anywhere as if I haven't left my desk... What do you think my network/wireless capabilities will be in Colombia?...

panthdave says on Aug 23, 2007, 13:49: Not the best..unless your housing will have a wireless router or internet connection....If you have a wireless/internet cellular card will not work...Postpago account is required.. panthdave Miami |

ColombianoGringo says on Aug 23, 2007, 14:04: Will you be staying at a hotel? Many of the nicer hotels in the larger cities have either wi-fi or at least a business center where you can use a computer.

msaucey says on Aug 23, 2007, 14:17: No... I connect through Verizon... I'll be staying at our house in Pereira for the most part, and have not had internet connection set-up... But, plan to do a bit of traveling to Bogota and to San Gil... Well, I guess maybe I'll just have to excuse myself and not work at all... Like a real vacation or something... They can use the old fashion telephone, if they really need to get my input... The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed. - CS Lewis |

tomtom33 says on Aug 23, 2007, 14:35: There was a wireless connection in the food court at Exito in Envigado. Might have more in other Exitos.

ColombianoGringo says on Aug 23, 2007, 14:37: I think panthdave is right. You can always hit an internet cafe and least be able to answer emails.

msaucey says on Aug 23, 2007, 15:02: The last time I was there, I did the internet cafe route, since there was a bunch of them there and it was cheap... Worst case scneario, I'll prompt them down that angle, but I'm with you CG I'm going to try and push the angle of unreachable.. Unfortunately, they know well enough, I'm not going to be in an area lacking daily needs... Papi de Alejo says on Aug 23, 2007, 15:11: I was in Santa Marta a few weeks ago. I too schlepped my laptop along. I have a PCMCIA wireless adapter and was pleasantly surprised to find about 6-10 networks available. Usually only 2-3 did not have security. Another option might be to go to a call center with wireless routers and just pay them for the security code.

msaucey says on Aug 23, 2007, 15:15: Hmmm.... okay, I'm going to have to think about it... Should I work or not... I guess, my final decision will be the week before I take off... Glad to know there may be an alternative... The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed. - CS Lewis |

ColombianoGringo says on Aug 23, 2007, 15:27: This reminds me of my dad last summer in Bogota. He was visiting my grandmother, who had just gotten a new place in El Nogal. Somehow he figured out that if you sat on the left side of a particular couch in the living room, you could catch a great, open wifi signal. If you moved so much as a foot in any direction, you would lose it. Doh!

msaucey says on Aug 23, 2007, 15:56: Tempting offer Raaay............. But, can't disclose that info....... But, it will be visible to all in about 3 - 4 weeks... One Private, One Public..... Should be interesting and a good thing for the overall environment I work in.... The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed. - CS Lewis |

Papi de Alejo says on Aug 23, 2007, 16:00: CG, you should have seen me practically hanging out of the condo window to get the better signals. Luckily I only did this when the game shows were getting pretty ludicrous. When I had to do something urgently, if I didn't catch a good signal first time, off to the internet call center I went.

panthdave says on Aug 23, 2007, 16:24: Talking about Wifi Signals all over the place...yes there are..In my apartment my damn labtop pick's up at least 10 even a hotel's signal about two blocks down the road...Smart idea see which one does not have security and steal there bandwith...But on a Verizon Card which will be assuming CDMA you won't get a connection via cellular..unless you are postpago account with a company with CDMA>.>data connection which is still running in Medellin but not sold..only GSM is kicking now...but I know for fact Comcel has CDMA towers working because my Sprint Phone will roam..don't use it fokin expensive but a couple times on my Sprint bill I see Comcel was roaming provider and my phone is only a CDMA Phone.. panthdave Miami |

Robert Jorge says on Aug 23, 2007, 17:20: Ditto everything Panthdave said. I actually figured out how to connect from my hotel once to an Avantel wifi location across the street. In Villavo though, hot-spots are next to none. Bogota, they can be found. But I just would go into an Internet cafe, and tell them I wanted to use my laptop. The people just kind of look at you when you sit down, unplug the Ethernet from the house computer and stick it in yours. But, I was never hassled and people were very accommodating.

panthdave says on Aug 25, 2007, 04:13: What do you mean Ditto..RJ...She said she had a Verizon CDMA Data card which won't work unless she get Comcel ip address and if they still transmit CDMA Data on there towers which I know they do voice signal for international customers...Wi-fi signals I get from my apartment are like crazy I always have to re-sort the signals to get mine somehow Hotel Belfort in Castropol always take number 1 on the list even when I make my signal automatic..and remove the others.. Anyways I even connected to my friend upstairs because he has no security..which can be done your just taking away from his bandwith which is not good but people do it...and of course you can go to the Internet Cafe..did that before I had my Banda Acha connection..and also stole from upstairs which he did not activate his WEP on his wireless connection.. panthdave Miami |

Robert Jorge says on Aug 25, 2007, 10:57: I was agreeing with what you said in a previous post in this thread. Some of what you wrote about, is over my head. But I was agreeing with trying to steal signals if there are any available. I was also agreeing with taking your laptop to an Internet cafe. That's all. I am trying to figure out what was confusing about my ditto. I guess I will stop using that term. jajaja
