Bringing booze to Colombia...

Does anyone know how much alcohol you can bring into Colombia?

Insert joke here -

Legally, 2 bottles of wine or spirits per person regardless of age. We have brought in an extra bottle or two with no problems.

Vodka is very expensive in Colombia, so if you are coming from Russia, I suggest bringing two liters of your country's best. Save some for me. But then, I drink too much. The last time I gave a urine sample it had an olive in it.

On my last trip I made a stop in Guatemala before continuing to Colombia. I loaded up on Ron Zacapa Centenario (highest rated). Took 4 bottles plus one of Vodka that I purchase at the airport. Was never told anything when I got to Bogota.

My last trip to Colombia, I brought a 1.75 litre of bourbon, and about 4 other 5ths of various liqours. I didn't get a second look. I declared them all, and was prepared to pay any duty necessary. Just my opinion and experience, they are not really worried about what is coming into Colombia - as long as it isn't weapons or huge amounts of money. Booze, I wouldn't sweat it. What's the worse that can happen if you bring in a lot? My guess is a duty. Perhaps confiscation - which would suck, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

I also left Colombia to the US with about 8 bottles of rum and aguardiente. Same story. I landed in Houston, and the guy asked me what I had in my suitcases. I told him, "nothing but a bunch of booze." The guy got a little wierd (don't know why, I declared it all), and a supervisor walked up, looked at my ticket, and he said : "Shit, he is going to Florida, we don't care about Florida". And I was waved on.

yummy...i don't have a fricken clue how much you're allowed to bring in...over the many, many years every time i left the country, i brought back bottles of booze for father, tios, friends...lots more than two bottles and NEVER got hassled.

now let me share a story about taking booze outta the country. when i first moved here, '89, after wrapping up a manufacturing project--2 1/2 yrs later--i cased up 12 carafs of ron medellin and aguardiente, six each, the big bottles and boarded avianca in medallo then to bogota where i would switch for the weekly flight to los angeles. when we got to the airport in bogota and were walking across the tarmak to the terminal--i was last person off the plane-- i looked back and watched the baggage coming down the 'walking ramp' on the side of the plane....then i saw my case, come out of the plane and begin it's descent down the ramp. about 2/3 the way down, one of the shleppers, grabs the box and wrestles it off the ramp...then realizing how heavy it was, drops it....FUCK. KASMASH. eleven of the twelve bottles history. about $180.00 out the tubes and on the tarmak. soooooo there's a message in all that. don't carry more than you can put in your luggage.

yeay, timba, but in 91-92, you couldn't buy ron medellin nor aguardiente antioquia...and just how would i get off the plane, go buy booze--that much--case it up and change planes for los angeles? all i was thinking of at that moment was the miserable 12 hr flight to los angeles, then having to drive up the valley to fresno to the farm. shopping wasn't in the picture. turned out i had one bottle to drink... oh, don't know a thing about those you mentioned. if you're talking about pedigree rum, not my style, i like the simple, local rums, kinda batch by batch, vis-a-vis things like bicardi or the like, as they're so refined and 'special' that they're more like drinking whiskey. i'm really fond of dark sweet rums. another i like is mathesulam, from dominica??..not sure. then again. buying a caraf for 15-18 bucks u.s. ain't happening. si o no?

I bought a case 12 bottles 750 ML. The baggage X-rayers in JFK told me I was one bottle over the limit but let it slide. When I got home and went through the X-Ray in Rio Negro no one said a thing. I guess it all depends.

Ron Medellín has been available in the NYC area for over 20 years. Just ask my uncle who drinks it by the case.

aged Zacapa is dark and sweet. You can ignore that it is one of the best makers of rum in the world if you want to. Should be available anywhere. It is Guatamalan.
