Bringing a little puppy to Cali?

Hello, I know this is probably covered some where, but cannot seem to find the thread. I was wondering about bringing my novia a bulldog puppy from the states. If it has all the papers/shots, etc. How much do's the airlines charge to ship a poquito perro, and do's the puppy have to spend time in quarantine. If so, how much time do's it spend in quarantine before I can pick it up. Or better yet, is there anyone out there that knows where I can buy a bulldog puppy. Either in CLO, CTG, BOG. Any answers would be helpful. Thanks, Buongone

puppy On my last flight from Bogota to Newark (on Continental), a girl had a small puppy in a soft-sided carrier. She was allowed to take the puppy along with her, in the main cabin, as long as the carrier remained on the floor, in front of her seat during take-off and landing. Continental could probably give you more information.

Can probably find a puppy in Colombia - there seem to be unfortunately larger numbers of unwanted animals... I'll try and do some digging tonight and post back - what city is CLO?

Also, animals aren't always a good surprise gift. Are you sure that she will be able to take the dog out regularly, is she allowed pets where she lives, if she lives with others, do they like pets?

All important considerations..

First Place To Start Contact the airline you will use and seek their requirements. It does vary from airline to airline.

Some "Old" paperwork when Mrs. Gator brought a cat:

The cat must be accompanied by a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian, and endorsed by a Veterinary Services (VS) veterinarian. Additional information shall include a statement to the effect:

The dog/cat was examined and found to be healthy and free of any clinical signs of infectious disease. Note: In general this examination should be conducted within 2 weeks of the departure date.
The animal was vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, and parvovirus. Animals over 4 months old must be vaccinated against rabies.
It is recommended that an International Health Certificate (APHIS FORM 7001)be used. We did not do this and no problem
The accompanying health certificate should be made out at least in duplicate.
The health certificate did NOT need to be signed by a Notary Public nor does it need to be stamped by the Colombian Consular office.
Personal pet dogs or cats do not need an Import permit.
The rabies vaccination certificate must accompany the health documents.

Colombia being Colombia I would be prudent to call the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to make sure you have the latest update

We had not problem and Ralph continues to live in the lap of luxury

Bringing Puppy to Cali- To: Buongone Yoy will also need a microchip inserted in the shoulder's puppy, the vet can do all this, along with the rest of the paper work, health certificate, vaccination certificate, and the puppy must be at least 8 weeks old, if you want to carry the puppy in the cabin with you, do not choose American Airlines as they do not allow the pets to travel in the cabin, on international flights, you can do so only on domestic flights (American) I am not sure about the other Airlines, please check with the one you will be traveling with and also a good idea to check with USDA. The pets are no required to be quarantined. I have traveled many times before with small and big dogs. Good luck!

Airedale Terrier is the way to go It is very good breed, and it is seldom seen in Colombia, everyone has to do with the looks of the dog. And the dog has "caracter"
Parece de Peluche
Parece de Juguete
Se parece a Cheveroni
Se parece a Alf

Se parece al dueño, jeje

Chances are the Bulldog you buy was taken from Colombia or any other country, give Puppies to go a call, ((305) - 262-7310) they take cachorros from Colombia.

Travelling with your Puppy: I live in Georgia and have flown from Atlanta to Bogota and back to Atlanta with my 10 pound Yorkshire Terrier. She travels with me in the cabin under the front seat. We fly Delta since that is a direct flight, 4 1/2 hours, for International flights they charge $200.00 Dollars each way. Call in advance because they do not allow more that 2 or 3 animals on board, only pets that weight less than 20 pounds and in an airline approved carry-on. You will need a Health Certificate signed by the Veterinarian with all the current vaccines. Rabies shot can not be more than a year old. I get the Certificate one week prior the trip. All Vets know about it, because people travel with their small pets all the time. Delta requires the Health Certificate. When you arrive to your destination in Colombia you need to take the dog to the "ICA - Sanidad Portuaria", (in Bogota the ICA office is right next to customs). They will check the dog and Health Certificate and charge you between $20 to $30 dollars, usually I do that after going through Immigration and before I pick up my luggage, I don't know where ICA is located at the Cali Airport. Good Luck.

Your Puppy and The Chip. To: Buongone Well, the chip works mainly as an ID. It is required now to travel in and out of Colombia and also to Europe. It is a very simple procedure and not expensive at all. Check with your Vet and I am sure he/she will explain anything you want to know. Good luck!

Flying w/ your dog Hi there,
Hopefully my recent experience can help a bit. My husband just took our Jack Russell from Washington state to Bogota via Continental airlines. We paid $100 and did all paperwork and vaccines they required. I recommend that you contact the airlines directly, get a person on the phone, and ask all your questions. Then, be sure to get the right sized carrier so that it can fit under the seat. Soft side is the best. We were worried our dog wouldn't fit because Continental is very strict about the animal being able to stand up fully and turn around. We actually took our dog in the carrier to the airport two days prior, had them okay it, and requested that they note the check in our "file" so we would have no surprises the morning of departure. The only other bit of advice if you choose to bring a dog w/ you on the plane, is to discuss with your vet options for calming the pet. Our vet suggested we give our dog 5 cc's of children's Benadryl. It calmed her enough so she was comfortable and no one knew there was a hyper Jack on board. Some owners may choose to go without...do what's best for you and your pet. There was no problem getting through the airport upon arrival to Bogota. Oh, the only other thing I remember is that in order to go through security, my husband had to take the dog out of the carrier and remove the leash and collar and carry her through. This was a bit of a hastle while traveling alone. So be prepared and give yourself plenty of time to get through security. Like you said, you may be better off buying there!

Buongone from my limited experience, the CHIP is a small micro-chip that a vet or animal shelter can quickly and I think, painlessly, embed into the ear of a dog. If you are a dog owner in the usa, then you should know about this by now, I would think. It is at least a national (but, maybe international) system of registration and identification. If your dog gets lost, and someone retrieves it, then takes it to a vet or animal shelter, they scan the dog, the personal info comes up on computer, and then they will be calling you shortly to come and get your dog. Nice.

Galecito Sorry, have not owned a dog for the last 35 yrs. Doubt if they had chips back then. Kinda like Dog Tags. Adrimm, thanks. My Novia called one of the dog owners in the portaldog.com web site. Maybe we can have some good luck there. The cost to take a dog on American Airlines from Cali-Miami is $100. They won't let you take the dog with you. He goe's back with the cargo somewhere. Thanks for the info. Buongone
