Not too old - I hope - the class was controlled pretty well, mostly younger but a few older-ish guys and one girl. For someone who is so inflexible that I cannot even sit cross-legged, I don't think I will be winning any outstanding student awards!!

I did Gracie JJ for awhile as an addition to boxing. I was the biggest guy in the school so i figured it would be easy. Had to check my ego at the door. Learning curve is huge. Students only 6 months in and 40 pounds lighter killed me for a couple of months. However since they had no control my body took the brunt of it. I still have tenditious in my right shoulder to this day. Still loved it and wish I stayed with it but got a little bored after a year as unless I wanted to compete or something I felt I got out of it what I wanted.

Wrestling is bar none the BEST foundation IMO for fighting. I say this because its free, its ancient (no mysterious moves just hard work and sick fitness) and its something you can start very early in life. If you are a very good wrestler who learns submissions and even more importantly how to avoid and counter submissions you can have the makings of a great ground fighter. Now I am not saying if you put a gi on them they will go win tournaments, but I am saying as far as applying your skills for fighting, you are a level ahead.

Of course as an ex-wrestler / boxer turned BJJer I do realize I still have some bad habits that are hard to break, but as far as matt awareness, getting the takedowns and more importantly not getting taken down, I owe that to my wrestling. I love BJJ and submission wrestling and I hate to compare, but bar none as far as fitness and scrap ability wrestling takes the cake. Pure BJJ is great but it requires more patience and is more like a chess match. Every skill has its place too.

Frank_Rizoo - I love hooks bro We trained hooks all the time in wrestling (Grapevines, half hooks, honey moon rides etc) maybe you mean something different from what I mean by the term hooks though.

I mean when you practice you wear sweats, shorts, whatever...then in the match you wear the singlet just so people don't get tangled up. I just go out, do work and finito..never really thought much about anything other that getting the W. Some people read to much into it I guess.

Yeah in MMA you find that the syles excelling are the same syles that were excelling in the 90's during the first UFC's. Those styles are competitive olympic based sports. I agree w/ you Jeff that competition fighting is only useful to a point as far as like Karate, TKD, Kung Fu..because they do form and theory.. but the olympic fighting arts as well as a few new hybrids are very effective.

Things like Judo, Wrestling, Boxing, Pankration (old school MMA which was basically wrestling mixed with boxing that they did in Greece) and the more modern spawn of Judo Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are all tested in competition at 100% speed and strength. For an example you have the Karate or NinJitsu practitioner who talks about how many ways he can defeat an enemy in a scripted environment..but a boxer, judoka, wrestler knows exactly what they are capable of against an equal or larger trained force in a competition.

I might be preaching to the choir here because it sounds like some of us have done some fight training, but the training in and of itself teaches you to react, counter and endure the attacks of others. You don't sit around and theorize about what works you train and you find out what works and what doesn't.

Thanks for the invite though Frank I def will look you up if I come to Cali. I have some things in Bogota so I will mainly be there when I'm in Colombia and I hooked up with a good group of guys there to get some training in with. The elevation is kinda killer...I wish I could train here for a few months at high elev. and the head back to USA for some tourneys...but that would mean I'd have to actually get my shit together and make solid plans ...who needs that shit ;)

So Frank if you're from HI depending where you're from I probably know some dudes you do, or its atleast a slight possibility. Im an East Coast dude all the way, but have some good friends in the fight scene (all in mainland now mostly due to work) that were from HI

I myself have always loved fighting and training its fun for me, however Its just something I do, it doesn't totally define me and Its just a part of who I am. That is my take on it but to each his own.
