merceytwo, I would recommend without hesitation Itacare in Bahia. Its exquisite and international. Its got everything. but bring lots of diluted dollars cuz they dont buy much in Brazil either.......

I've been to Rio, Sao Paolo, Salvador da Bahia, and a couple of other places. It's been a few years, but I still have some info.

What kinds of things are you interested in seeing and doing?

The beaches of Salvador are much more beautiful and enjoyable than those of Rio, Ipanema included. Pelourinho is a much larger version of Cartagena's walled city. Plenty of old churches, forts, slave quarters, etc. I stayed up in Itapua, did it the local way. Plenty of small shops all around, and I saw that throughout the city. My hotel was only $40/nite for a double. There are plenty of reasonably priced hotels and hostels all over.

After 2-3 days of hardcore partying in Rio, it got old to me. However, Rio is much more foreigner-friendly than Salvador, and there's always much to do in Rio.

For Rio, my jumpoff point years ago was www.ipanema.com. Plenty of info there.

Also, check out www.gringoes.com. It's a real site.

Regarding real estate, I have no idea. It wasn't on my radar when I was going there. We were looking into business ops down there, but the hoops that one needed to jump through legally and illegally wasn't worth it. Anyway, here's a site that I found. Maybe it'll steer you in the right direction. http://www.uv10.com/

Best of luck.
