Brain freeze is a serious problem in Colombia... Be especially careful in places like Cali and Jamundi (Valle de Cauca)... where they sell "cholados" capable of giving you a bad case of brain freeze.

The cholados in Cali gave me something other than brain freeze.

30% of the population gets brain freeze... The reaction is triggered by the cold substance consumed coming into contact with the roof of the mouth. It irritates nerves in the region (sphenopalatine ganglia), causing them to spasm. These nerves cause the blood vessels in the brain to dilate. When vessels in the brain dilate, a common effect is an acute headache (a similar effect occurs when one takes a prescription vasodilator, such as Nitroglycerin or Viagra).

El Politécnico? That's a pretty good public highschool, not a university.

In fact, the Politécnico has gradually evolved, from being largely a secondary education institution (70s) to being more like a community college, with some emphasis on vocational training. Isn't that right, Platano?

platano says on Mar 5, 2006, 07:50:

Yes, I think the community college analogy is most apt... Politécnicos provide valuable educational opportunities for many Colombians who don't have the connections, money, or interest in getting into Andes or one of the other elite universities. I would say these educational institutions go even beyond the traditional USA community college model, because the community colleges usually don't have the range of engineering offerings, like civil engineering.

These are the kinds of programs offered at El Politécnico Colombiano Jaime Isaza Cadavid:
