Books in Bogota...& Cali & Medellin

"Books and Books", Calle 140, # 18-05 have got some good discounts on English-language books at the moment. I believe it's to coincide with the book fair. Their titles are very student orientated, but at $5000 a pop for "Penguin Popular Classics", I've got no problem reading; Bronte, Hardy, Conrad & Kipling...again. They've got other titles upstairs; Tolkein, Kerouac and other classics at between 20 and 60% discount. Other oulets in Medellin and Cali.

I'd be interested to know of any worthwhile second-hand bookshops in Bogota.

If any one lives in cartagena you can trade your books, one for one, at Club Nautico. They have books in English Dutch French German and other languages. The selection is pretty good but depends on what the cruiser have to trade.

I believe there is a campaing to motivate reading in Bogotá, the public transportation "Transmilenio" is included.

I heard also La Feria del Trueque where people wanting to trade book meet at a detemine place and exchange them.

En marzo de 2004 se creó el programa Libro al Viento que pone a circular los libros en la ciudad con el fin de acercar a los ciudadanos a la lectura. Para ello, se publica cada mes una obra breve de la literatura clásica universal, y se distribuye gratuitamente en diversos espacios de la ciudad. Paralelamente, se desarrollan actividades de promoción de lectura que faciliten y hagan atractivo el camino al libro. A estas actividades se convoca a escritores, maestros, actores y, en general, a buenos lectores de todas las profesiones, de manera que se cree una red en torno al libo y a la lectura.
