Bogota Video Request

I know that there are a few of you in Bogota, and I was wondering if someone might be able to do the world of transportation a favour..

The Transmilenio in Bogota is possibly the world's best example of a high capacity heavily used Bus Rapid Transit system. It truly sets the bar for what many other cities in the world aim to achieve. However in North America things tend to happen on the cheap and rapid bus systems don't get stations - the get glorified bus stops.

My strongest belief is that the fare-paid all-door, level-boarding stations in Bogota are an essential ingredient to a successful BRT. Unfortunately there are no videos out there that describe the Transmilenio station design and functions.

Soo....I'm looking for someone to make a video clip (of any quality) about a minute or two long that shows one of the Downtown Transmilenio Stations (Las Aguas?) and describes (in English) using the station - how you get from the sidewalk to the station, past the vending window and turnstiles to the main station area, maybe show a bus pulling up, and people disembarking from the several doors.

Post it on U-Tube and then post a link here or something!!

Miami Dade County Transit Authority May Be using the Transmilenio as a Concept for reducing congestion so I don't know if they might have a clip or not. I know its being studied,,,

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

The transportation in Bogota and surrounding areas is interesting. Talking about it brings as many opinions and emotions as discussing religion or politics. And much is due to each person's experience. Rubito for instance loves the TM. IMO the TM is good but there is much room for improvement.

Now to point you in the direction of what you want. The People Mover in Detroit uses the same system of the TM (multiple doors, etc), but the stations are much nicer. http://www.thepeoplemover.com/WE-LL-TAKE-YOU-THERE!.id.2.htm

And they put it above ground so that there were more road space for the cars. Well what do you expect from the Motor City. But I do not know if they have a video showing it.

Possibly you might find what you want at the TM web site.

Which I believe is an excellent model since you can easily find what bus to take to get where. Kudos to the TM for their web site.

Also note that the stairs of the TM system do not meet the qualifications of the USA for the handicapped wheelchair bound people. And I believe they would have a lawsuit going immediately if you built the structure identical to that of the TM.

The mass transit system in Miami-Dade county is horrible. End of story.

I 've found one good link to a short video but it only shows the loading platform:

Goungzhou in China is modelling their BRT after the TM. The boarding time differences (0.3 seconds vs 2-5 seconds) that a proper station can have are astonishing.. and essential if it will still be abiding by traffic lights.

video link: http://www.gzbrt.org/videos/on-off.swf
http://www.gzbrt.org/en/stations.asp

The intro and page 11 are good: http://www.nctr.usf.edu/jpt/pdf/JPT%209-3S%20Kantor.pdf

JMCana, Elevated roads would be nice, but since BRT is often the *much* cheaper alternative to LRT (light rail transit) (becuse is is ground based), I imagine that the cost of building it on elevated roadways might make it just as or more expensive than a rail-based LRT.

As for BRTs, there is little debate, TM is currently the world's highest use BRT. They're trying it in Asia as well, and are discovering that systems with deviations (ie no proper stations, or not fully separate lanes) are achieving far less ridership, and slower speeds. TM somehow hits all the right spots, and even manages to be a victim of it's own success.

PS Video request still stands.

Pictures are great (I have a tidy collection from several years of surfing BRT stuff), but a video is even better.

Thanks Thur Thur, they're perfect but are in *Spanish*, I need English..How can I download them and add subtitles? Can I only get them from the posters?

I'd seen the third one, it's perfect but needs narration - if I could get a copy of it I'd be happy to narrate and repost it...

Hmm maybe I'll write the poster add some narration and send it back to them to repost. Thanks for the inspiration.
