This may not be useful for the ones already living there but for tourists as that is a hotel zone. This is how it works:
Thugs on the streets with fake police IDs stop foreign looking people, aske them for their passport and then ask for their money (dollars of Euro is their preference) in order to "verify its authenticity". After that they just take out...
http://www.eltiempo.com/bogota/2008-05-08/ARTICULO-WEB-NOTA_INTERIOR-4...

rhydewithdis says on May 8, 2008, 07:03: I had some guy try to run this scam on me back in 2003. Nothing new. They ask for money, jewelry, anything of value. No one should fall for it. They said I couldn't play football I was too small / They say I couldn't play basketball I wasn't tall / They say I couldn't play baseball at all / And now everyday of my life I ball. |
|
jonas says on May 8, 2008, 07:05: people have been falling for this one for many years. Should any of you be approached by "police" in such manner always assume they are not. Keep walking. If they are insistent and threatening tell them you will only show documents in a CAI. Don´t get into a car with them, insist on walking. When you see a uniformed official, make a move to call his attention. This scam happens a lot in the centro, too. Caracas, Venezuela is another famous spot for this scam. What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been |

tomtom33 says on May 8, 2008, 12:22: A good friend of mine had this successfully pulled on him in Laureles in Medellín. He is an experienced traveler but speaks virtually no Spanish. He was alone walking from my apartment to Spanish classes at UPB.

|
jonas says on May 8, 2008, 12:46: The trick they apparently use a lot is that when you hesitate to hand over your passport and money they will stop another "foreigner" who speaks perfect Spanish and hands over his passport and money which they will promptly return to him. The other foreigner works with the gang. Now most tourist will be convinced that this is all legitimate. Always ask to walk to the next CAI. What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been |

christobeldawg says on May 9, 2008, 20:01: boy you are right there Elmo. In the US, most people think of Colombia as Mexico, just further south, the place where the drugs come from, and the place where one goes to get kidnapped, but I have seen that the people there from the different regions are completely different from each other. In Bogota, they tend to be hard working, serious minded business types, though still a bit more alive than most north Americans. On the coast, they are just flat out wide open, life loving, partying types. That is a sterotyping generalization, but ya know what I mean. I guess the common bond I have seen is that they all tend to have a closeness to their families, and the ones from the different regions tend to have much respect for those that are from the other regions, generally. admittedly, arriving can feel great too |

They are often stereotyped as loud, lazy and stupid. Even normally pleasant people will often get worked up and show some serious hatred when it comes to Costeños. People will often make fun of other regions. There are plenty of jokes about Pastusos, Opitas, Paisas, etc., but many people absolutely hate Costeños. I'm not saying it's right, but it happens.
