Bogota Major Earthquake Warning.. is this a Hoax????

I just received this from my best friend in Bogota. Apparently there is an earthquake warning, her sister is in the colombian army and says they have been warned of something similar. The warning reads something about techtonic plates shifting after 1000 years or so... I am not a sismologist, what do I know.

According to this "communique" bogota is due for an earthquake of an intensity between 6 and 8.3 on the Richter scale.

There is even a website related to it:

http://www.conlospiesenlatierra.gov.co

Here is the message my friend passed me. It sounds like something meant to alarm, I wouldn't give it too much credibility but who knows. Has anybody else heard anything about this?

http://www.conlospiesenlatierra.gov.co

I mean 8.0 not 8.3. That would be very devastating.

Yeah, rumblings alright. I remember back in Manizales as a little girl I can remember.... we had warnings about El Nevado del Ruiz erupting. Nothing ,until one day "bang", I heard it erupting in the middle of the night, next morning we were covered by fog and Armero was gone.

Are the Bogota buildings built for Terremotos like Lima, Peru...and really you need the epicenter really close in City limits to cause devasting damage...You have a 8.0 not deep and within 20 miles of Bogota Bogota will be no more.....

at the office we got a presentation from the office of the alcalde, the gist was bogota is a former lake that has filled in over the past 1000 years (eldorado airport was a lake 100 years ago), if there is an earthquake like the one in peru within 50 miles of bogota we'd be pretty screwed.

any building built after '97 should have reinforcement for earthquakes, but anything older than that might or might not have something.

Remember everything is effected...Miles from Epicenter/Depth of Epicenter which saved Lima's Ass....because a 7.9 or higher very close to the surface and close to major city..Would be devasting....Even I think Terremoto buildings enforced probably could not survive a 8.0 Epicenter within 20-50 miles and very close to the surface..

I often wondered what a major earthquake would do to Bogota, or any other city in Colombia. Everything seemed to be that clay, hollow block structure with a few re-bars here and there. Of course I am talking about normal houses and other structures, 1 to 3 stories in height. That stuff would crumble in an earthquake. It's pretty scary to think about. But like Rubi said, I am not going to dwell on it, nothing you can do anyway.

If you really want to know I watched the special on Memphis Tennessee could have one of the most devasting earthquakes and not one building is earthquake proof.. They would all crumble...

And I would treat a earthquake prediction with less credibility than a hurricane prediction. Hurricane predictions or forecasts are NEVER accurate, and usually the opposite of what they predict actually happens. I am not talking about when a hurricane is in the Gulf, 2 days from US landfall for example. Those predictions are getting better. I am talking about the idiot in Colorado that forecasts how many hurricanes we will see in a season. He never gets it right.

jajaja GIB, sorry, didn't mean to shake you up. (pun intended) Most of the (all actually) one story houses I was in in Colombia had fiberglass or some other light, corrugated sheeting for the roof. Often, that was also the ceiling. That wouldn't hurt too bad. Getting hit by the brick wall would suck though.

But then again, we've been scared all of our lives since kids warning us about the "End of the World". hmm...don't think that is going to happen at one precise moment.

I heard from a real state agent that downtown Bogotá in the event of an earthquake will becom a lake or something alike, well the guy don´t have properties for sale there, and wants buyers to buy where he got them.

...A yo, déjenme queto y no me jodan má! ...

I have been in Colombia during a minor movement (Bucaramanga, 1993), and it woke me up but that was it.

Most regions on or adjacent to plate edges have some sort of cycle for major quakes. The longer it has been without minor or medium movement (3-6) then the higher the chance of something like an 8 or 9 - which could make most buildings almost anywhere uninhabitable.

Of course the most immediate problem beyond shelter, would be the lack of infrastructure. No water, no power, broken sewage lines, damaged hospitals, cut off roads, etc. problems that could take months to fix. It's a scary thought.

But going back to the buildings, the problem is that retro-seismic upgrading can be soo expensive that it is usually more cost-effective to tear down and start from scratch.. thus totally removing all heritage or character buildings (which would be horrific, imho).

Most cities aren't prepared for this (and apparently neither are federal authorities). imho the most they could do would be to have agreements between similar sized cities across the world (5 or 6) where they have enough supplies (water purifiers, rations, generators, tents, etc) to care for one city for a week or so, and split them up. When something happens in one city, the rest of the network coordinates an immediate response.

Seeing as that is pretty unlikely for alot of places, it is up to the individual to have emergency kits prepared for themselves. campstove, dried food, 3 L of water pp per day, tent, extra set of clothes, first aid etc. Think of work too - maybe have something there.

RJ, just look at what happened to Armenia in '99 excerpt from Wikie.

"In January 25 1999, at 1:19 P.M. (local time), the city was devastated by an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake caused extensive damage to the city, mainly because of poor construction codes and aging buildings . The earthquake claimed several thousand lives and left over 200,000 people homeless."
