Bogotá Bomb

Just heard of a bomb going off in Bogotá.

Don't know when, where or why yet, but rumours are 2 killed.

By Alma del Norte on Jan 27, 2009, 19:07 in Friendly Talkzone.

manINred says on Jan 27, 2009, 19:13:

It says three are dead. Maldito FARC de mierda. As they get more desperate, I wonder if things will get worse.

That sorta thing is so horrible. It reminds you that Colombia is still a country with serious internal problems.

manINred says on Jan 27, 2009, 19:21:

I'm not sure... it just seems the logical choice. I'll eat my words if wrong (and I very well could be), but my Colombian friends think the same.

Well, whoever is after me for making false assumptions on the internet can come and get me. They 'd probably freeze to death before finding me anyway ;)

Alma del Norte (☼Travelguide writer) says on Jan 27, 2009, 19:29:

Quick translation:

"The dead are a 25 years old woman and a man responsible for caring for the vehicles at the Blockbuster store, that was completely destroyed by the explosion. Several nearby buildings were evacuated.

Interior Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio announced a reward of 100 million pesos for information on the perpetrators.

The explosion occurred at an ATM next to the Blockbuster. It was revealed that the store had been a victim of extortion. Five vehicles were destroyed in the parking lot.

Police cordoned off the area and at this time are investigating the causes of the explosion. The injured, at least 20 in number, are being transferred to the Country clinic.

The first official reports confirm that this was a terrorist attack.

The blast also caused serious damage in the residential sector.

Police diverted traffic and asked the public to take alternative routes to facilitate access by emergency vehicles."

As long that there is coke sniffing fiends in Miami, N.Y. and all over the world, Colombian money fiends are out to grab it, why should you be surprise, that the government of Colombia has a stake in the deal, why so many of you refused to accept the reality on the matter, is business as allways, we may never know who is behind these bombings, could it be FARC? or the police? or the PARAS? who are the paras anyway? is it you or me? we are all complices in this passion play. are we not. think about it. Its a dangerous world we live in, no matter where you go.

All truth goes through three phases. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self evident.

22 killed in surging wave of violence in Mexico !

Tue Jan 27, 9:06 pm ET

22 killed in surging wave of violence in Mexico AFP/File – Photo illustration of a Mexican policeman standing next to a Petroleos de Mexico oil truck. Twenty-two …

MONTERREY, Mexico (AFP) – Twenty-two people were found shot dead late Monday and Tuesday in northern Mexico, including four found on property belonging to the state-run oil giant Pemex, police said.

The killings are likely the result of the ongoing war between powerful drug cartels for control of lucrative access corridors to the United States, officials said.

Petroleos de Mexico workers found the bodies of the four men, some half-dressed and with tape over their eyes, piled up in a well on company property some 150 kilometers (93 miles) northeast of Monterrey, on the US-Mexican border.

The men had all been shot in the head, police in this prosperous and heavily industrialized city told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile to the west in the state of Chihuahua, a state also bordering the United States, police found 18 bodies.

Among the dead were three men were found Tuesday afternoon in the state capital Chihuahua with their hands and feet tied. Police said that witnesses saw how the victims were forced out of a vehicle and riddled with bullets on the spot.

Other bodies were found in different state cities, including five in Ciudad Juarez, the epicenter of a war between the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels. Already 116 people have been killed in drug violence in Juarez in 2009.

In 2008 some 2,400 people were murdered in Chihuahua state, 1,600 of them in Ciudad Juarez, according to government figures.

The Mexican government has deployed some 36,000 soldiers across the country to battle organized crime.

Across the country, 5,300 people were murdered in 2008, the government said.

no surprise here. thankfully i moved to the lovely coast, away from Bogotá - however for the six months that i was there, attacks were happening on average once per month. mostly in the north side. CRA 9 # 82 isn't terribly far from andino and zona t. the fact that this is extortion related and without concern for innocents can't make a lot of people living in a nice part of Bogotá feel too good.

My bet, it was extortion based and somebody got a little too crazy with the punch the explosives packed and caused a lot more mayhem than they intended.

Don't be surprised if it happens on the "lovely" coast too. Although half those neighborhoods I saw in CTG, blowing them up would probably be an improvement :P

mike08 says on Jan 28, 2009, 04:17:

there is plenty of common crime in cartagena. since arriving in bogota in july, there were about 7 "terror related" attacks within 20 blocks of my strata 6 apartment. so, yes, i would be very surprised if similar attacks occur and with the same frequency in boca/castillo grande.

You can change your Bush comment about the shoe. Bush is gone and what did your boy Clinton do about Al Qaeda from 93 to 2000? You know, the first World Trade Center bombing in 93? Liberals have short memeories at times maybe...? Maybe not...? Seven years to get himself serviced in the White House by a 22 year old intern and nothing against terrorists? Not to mention the Cole incident and the Kenya embassy.

Goin South - you raise a good point. A city of 7.5 million people, and 2 are killed .... and? A Bogota resident had a 1 in 3.25 million chance of being killed. If one were to do real risk assessment science - unless in certain specific groups, the average Bogota resident would have a better chance of being killed by a shark - though they would never even see the ocean in their lifetime.
