This video (half hour)shows that there is more in Bogotá than zona rosa, and that Tourism is not only about night life. As it is shown there are many interest groups and activities. That there are rainy days as well as sunny ones.

The guy went back to Canada with a different opinion of Colombia, he saw its people no just the girls :-)

By Stephen Downes
Some of the Places shown are,
Catedral de Zipaquira, Pequeña iglesia en el Chorro Quevedo, Camino hacia Monserrate, y Monserrate. Eje Ambiental, Juan Valdez, Parque Nacional entre otros.

Ella Album : Rock'n'Roll Patxuko
Artista : Kolokon

Marvels everywhere at 14:02 the narator says: "I was looking at the soldiers as they came in and the thing that struck me about them, is that they were so young, they were children. And I wondered what their lives would be like in 30 years and they're still standing guarding the streets, and I was wondering what makes the cab drivers want to be cab driver for 30 years. There's no future in it, there's no hope. When you define yourself, when everything you are is the way you make money, then everything you are is something very limited, something without hope, something without a future, something with nothing to strive for."

Sounds like everyone that works! Just because someone is a taxi driver or Police officer doesn't mean they are suicidal with no future or hope. This guy really pisses me off with this part. Really, it sounds like a common viewpoint when someone of "Self-perceived higher status" looks upon the "lower". I feel the same way about him and his low job and there is absolutely someone out there that feels the same way about me. I never defined myself by my job no matter how big or how small. This guy is projecting his viewpoint on the rest of the world. It's insulting and materialistic, really, if you ask me.

And then the depressing piano/violin interlude lasts until 16:35 - photos that are supposed to show despair are actually photos that to me, show something great. Tienda, baby, The girl on the llama, the panaderia, the people on the streets walking, soccer game etc.... He is painting a pretty bleak picture. I have seen more smiling and happy people in 20 seconds crammed like sardines in a passing bus than I've seen in this entire 30 minute video.

at 16:36 He saw the marathon and marvelled at the fact that they were running for no pay? Do marathon runners get paid elsewhere? He marvells at the Graffiti. And afterwards he talks about how there were kids in the museum inches away from a Monet and they were interested in the frame and not the artwork. This happens all the time in Museums all over the world and not just with kids!

at 20:30 there is a spray painting of DIM - in Bogotá! Although I'm a AN fan it's good to see someone in Bog representin' for Medallo!

I liked a good deal of the scenery but his wonderment in the park at 25:53 (again he's amazed) "And it wasn't just the one group of dancers and the one group of drummers. As I wandered through that park and walked through another park I saw more - much more. At one point I saw a group of people standing in a circle, and the people around the circle would take turns entering the circle and telling a story or a joke."

This guy has never been in a park in a large city?

I think he's sensationalizing his experience and making Colombia appear "a certain way" in order enhance his story of his experience.

I really did appreciate the visuals but the bottom line is that this guy did not really interact with any people nor did he really see what Colombia has going for it - the people. He stood from afar with "Diego" and looked in like he was watching an aquarium.

This guy, after three free days acts/says Colombia is his home. I have no problem with that but if that is true, his video is extremely paradoxical.

I could agree with you up to some point Rocinante, but I am guessing the guy stay in Colombia maybe in a week, and obviously he was on a work duty not just cruising, he took his time to do the video and share it. Although his video was a little bit elaborate, the guy in a short time period got his feet wet.

It is not easy to do a video, to edite it, put some music plus have something to say.

Actually I'd say that most public spaces (parks, plazas) in most Canadian cities are not heavily used at all - even in the summer - its not a very common thing to do, to go and hang out in the park, or use park space for excercise (other than team sports) or dance practices. Colombians and other cultures of latin influence tend to use public spaces far more than Canadians do (even in the summer). I can imagine it was quite the contrast for this fellow to see.

He also probably doesn't realise that of those young soldiers he saw are completeing their required military time, and in 30 years time may hardly remember it!

As for "seeing the people" he'd have to be deaf dumb and blind (or determined to not interact) to not notice people in Colombia.

Despite all my little critiques I do think it is an interesting narrative for what was probably very few days seeing Bogota and the area. I give him credit for his honesty. I think that post-trip, most foreigners visiting for the first time don't like to admit the extent of their nerves.

Also I don't think this guy is a teacher, I think he's an education researcher, probably from some university - you've got long hair and CBC-esque narration. In fact I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up trying to hawk it to CBC or on the radio.

Webman He clearly states that he had 3 free days - he didn't venture out on the first day, the other 3 days were work and then he had 3 free days to make the video. If you listen to his words, listen to his music and look at the images shown and put it all together I think the guy is making some serious empty judgments. And I think you, like many here including myself, see the images and think - cool - something on Bogotá. But really listen to the message.

The fact that he took the time to do this is honorable but the tone of his viewpoint is pretty self indulgent in that it makes him seem like he's some hero for going too big bad dangerous Bogotá and noticing that the people there have "no future in it [thier jobs], there's no hope [thier lives]. When you define yourself, when everything you are is the way you make money, then everything you are is something very limited, something without hope, something without a future, something with nothing to strive for."

These are his words, but in the video they are read or narated with even more of a depressing bleakness.

What is really going on? He is putting himself in the shoes of the people and projecting his views and opinions of how he would feel if it were him, on the the real people he's talking about. Then he is saying "This is the way it is for these people". This is called projection. How can he really know what the people he's describing are really feeling? He only knows his own feeling if he were in their situation.

If he were to actually talk and spend time with the police officers and taxi drivers he would find out that their existence is different than what he's outlined.

I highly doubt the three free days he had there that he had ANY human interaction besides Diego.

Rocinante The style is pure CBC -style, tone of voice, detached talking head, everything. I agree it can read as condescending considering the time he was there for - but make no mistake the style is a a direct rip-off of on-air monolgues from CBC.

As for the content, that is how he saw it...and at least it's a change from crass "Wow, Colombia is hot-chick-land" commentary.

If you don't believe me (and can stay awake or like classical music) listen to CBC Radio 2 in the daytime. http://www.cbc.ca/programguide/radio/
