This was just broadcast on MSNBC: in Cartagena a 15 inch long black shrimp was discovered. A Colombian biologist bought it for further study.

Read the news again Actually, that same biologist that bought it said that it's bad news.

Apparently that species is not native to colombian underwater ecosystem and it's a highly predatory species that could destroy the local small shrimp population.

Horned Devil in Cartagena a 15 inch long black shrimp was discovered.

It was probably brought in by the chinese in the uk the same thing happened with the crayfish which were been used by the chinese in restraunts and escaped and bread and now has almost wiped out the native crayfish and local fish populations.

Apparently that species is not native to colombian underwater ecosystem and it's a highly predatory species that could destroy the local small shrimp population.

I must need medical attention because I’m in agreement. Geeeez, I hope an MRI isn’t required.

Yep,, here’s what one looks like, look at that horn !!!! 15 long, big enough to choke a Pelican.

Just what Colombia needs,, more Horney Foreigners.

So... Is this another one of those foreign species introductions that is probably caused by pumping out ballast water?

and non natives are only one issue When I was in Colombia recently, I met with two biologists at EAFIT (this is my area of study). One of the two is examining the community-level changes of the reefs (species composition and overall diversity) offshore and framing the islands off Cartagena. The reefs are being threatened greatly by pollution runoff and siltation, the path of which is still altered (the currents) incredibly due to old spanish canal excavations. That combined with global warming bleaching out the more susceptible species of corals spells trouble. The coral has intrinsic value, ecosystem function value, and monetary value due to increasing tourism/diving/snorkeling, which might never be realized if not taken care of. Wow is the water off of Cartagena polluted. Now consider throwing non-natives into the mix. Did I mention Colombia has great biologists?

Row, Row, Row your Roe Is this another one of those foreign species introductions that is probably caused by pumping out ballast water

Keen observation, yes,, I’d say pumping is the common denominator.

Pia, welcome! I have posted news of research by Colombian scientists from time to time on PBH. Colombia has excellent scientists (including biologists) because the Colombian educational system is superior. Good to have you here!plátano

platano says on Apr 18, 2006, 19:52:

No, I am not a biologist.... I just have friends who are biologists. One friend is a marine biologist but now he is working with John Todd, the person who developed "living machine" water purification systems. (see more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Todd_(biologist)

My friend is going to do some field work in Costa Rica soon on restoring wetlands. Like all Colombian scientists I know, my friend is brilliant, extremely intelligent, first in his class (full scholarship at Univalle). You are in good company... Welcome, Pia!

GringoD Blackened red snapper is really gooood stuff! There is a place here close to where I live, the restaurant makes great blackened filets of red snapper.
We do not need to bring any chefs to Colombia, you and I need to get together when we are ready to travel to Colombia and I will take you to a paradise of hot stuff, I mean hot stuff as a food complimented with ají picante. I even would like to try the one from Leticia, Amazonas.
