so i've been here for almost 5 months and i can't find any GOOD coffee. i've tried 3-4 brands (the more expensive ones) at Carullas and 2-3 types at the specialty coffee store in Oviedo Mall (right under food court). they are all dried out and bitter tasting. i never thought i would say this, but i miss my $8 a bag Starbucks Breakfast Blend.
* is it CRAZY that i can't locate good coffee in Colombia or am i looking in the wrong places?

Miguel says on Jul 27, 2006, 10:07: tejasmarcos In general, the "good stuff" gets exported. I can buy fresher Colombian coffee a quarter of a mile from my house here in the States than I can in a coffee specialty shop in Barranquilla. A good friend of mine is a coffee buyer and taster who clued me in to this. I bought a bag of "alleged" top shelf coffee in a shop in Barranquilla and another in Bogotá and had him taste them. Both, in his opinion, were between 3 and 4 months old. Talk to the locals, and find a coffee farm that sells it right off the finca. There is a hotel in Barranquilla that gets it's beans directly from several growers in the eje cafetero.

tejasmarcos says on Jul 27, 2006, 10:15: i've heard that before, miguel. europe gets all the best beans and the usa gets what's left. i think you are right in suggesting i find the beans coming direct from the farm. when they are "fresh", they look oily and the molido (ground) tends to clump a little bit because it is "stuck" together due in part to all the oil from the beans. trying to walk a straight line on sour mash and cheap wine... 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

ColombiaBoard says on Jul 27, 2006, 18:34: Coffe roasters in Medellin Yes, there are actually more than two roasting plants in Medellin, a big one next to the Carrefour along Autopista Sur, on the west side, they roast coffe there and then pack it under brand names such as Aguila, La Bastilla and others.

Actually, the best coffee in Medellin is found at plaza san ignacio by the old guy pushing a baby carriage full of coffee thermos and cigarettes. Sure, you might burn your fingers through the extremely thin plastic cups, but hey, its only 300 pesitos!
