I would love to ride down in Colombia. That would be a blast to go for the ride in Medellin. Like Calor11 asked, how does one get a motorcycle into Colombia ... legally? I know the rules, but there has to be a way that doesn't cost more than the motorcycle. Something that crossed my mind, is that perhaps somebody could disassemble their motorcycle, and then send the parts down. Then, have a dealer reassemble the bike. I suppose the paperwork would be the monkey wrench in that idea. Even if I was able to get my bike there, then I would have to find gas stations that have 92 octane gasoline. I guess it just wouldn't be possible, but it sure would be fun.

I would love to get my souped up Suzuki Hayabusa down there. I cannot imagine a group of 700 or more 125cc bikes getting together. it must look like a moped convention.

a historic note... back in 1989, i had checked out of the intercontinental and moved down to a hotel in laureles. i was a bit home sick and just sitting, wide awake, in my bed about 3 a.m.

there was no way i was going home soon, as i had begun a manufacturing business in medellin and the surrounding pueblos and was just at the beginning of my first 2 1/2 year stint.

thinking of home, my kids and the fact i was the only foreigner there in medellin...with the exception of the occassional fly-boy down there for a dope run back to the states, you might say i was depressed. i had no idea that my stay would end up being so long and contain so many dangerous, wonderful and bizzare experiences...bombings, murders, partying like never before and just coming abreast of colombia ala medellin, pablo, dope, beautiful women, fantastic music and great food.

while sitting there on my bead, i was brought to consciousness of the reality of my surroundings by the 'thuka-thuka-thuka' of a harley coming down the street, in the dead silence of those early morning hours.

ALRIGHT!, i said to my self....a harley. it can't be all bad. needless to say, a harley in medellin in those days was as rare as chicken teeth. one in maybe one million bikes. but none the less, that sound, that bike, broke the choking influence of my solitude and lethe.

now, for you bike lovers... if you go to centro comercio san diego, and go out back in the area where there are the small businesses--it'll make sense when you get there. walk around a bit and in one of those office condos, you'll see the better part of a bike collection second to none, anywhere. when i was there, the guy had 18-20 pre 1930-40 motorcycles in shrowroom condition. a real show case.

i first discovered it while visiting one of the boutiques in san diego and in the back of the shop sat an early inline-6 harley from the 30's with the original leather grips and seat. an incredible find. i asked the girl if it was for sale, to which she replied, i don'[t think so, as the owner was very rich (a capo).

when i got back to my condo in poblado, i called my business partner in london and told him about the bike and that i was gonna offer $12,500.00 the following day. i mentioned that we could sell it in that era, over the phone for over $30,000.00.

well when i went back and told the girl, she said she would relay the offer to the owner. she did this and apparently he just laughed. the girl told me that he said he had about 20 bikes of the same rarity. and, 'no thanks.'

it wasn't until some years later that i discovered his collection out in the office condos behind san diego. go see.
