beware with the ATMs

I just found out that somebody took out of my bank account in Colombia 900.000 cop. I had to call my mum to blocked my card straight away, the amount had been taking out little by little I think the had clone my card!! because the card have been here with me in the UK all the time! this has happened to a friend of my mum too, they took 1 million out of her account. the same with my English card i used this one while in Colombia but I've noticed transation made in mid-to end January when I was already back in the UK, again little by little amounts, so I had to blocked that card too. what it's going on? now i don't feel safe using ATM's.

kat just this month up in Cucata they found a gang who was placing a fake covering on the ATMS where you slide your card into....this fake device spits your cards back out after you put your pass code in...it takes a picture of your card and your password....an hour later the gang comes and retrieves the covering...and you know the rest

In Miami they nailed a South American Gang From Venezuela who slip one of these fake covers over the real ATM. These guys were operating in Kendall, Brickell, Coral Gables, South Beach ect. When you pass your Legit ATM card thru this appuratus, it scans the Magnetic data Tape on the Back of the card. It is said someone may have been nearby or close by with a pair of Binoculars to watch as you enter your PIN# ; with this, they got you and your $$$! They fabricate a new blank ATM card with your encoded data on the new card's magnetic strip and then KA-Ching, that sweet cash register sound as they suck the $$$ out of your account! Cover that keyboard when you are punching in those numbers! If someone is too close behind you, I ask them to move back or simply cancel my transaction and go to another location. Sorry to hear of your trouble Kat! You Bank isn't holding you responsible are they?

Another group of South American Scammers here in Miami placed a "Closed Sign" on the real ATM drive thru of one of the local miami banks and then set up their own portable ATM mounted on a trailer in the Bank parking lot! Once you inserted the CArd into their ATM and you keyed in your PIN, their machine returned the card with a message like "unable to finish transaction" Now they have the Card Info and your PIN and they make new cards and again KA-Ching, that Sweet Sound as they empty your account! They are inventive in Miami! Less dangerous then selling dope or holding up people! After a few hours they simply hook it up to the Hitch and tow it to a new location for more of the KA-Ching! LOL

Cards in ATMs I may be wrong but most of ATM´s in Colombia will not keep the card while doing the transaction, that at least includes ATM´s from Bancolombia-Conavi, Davivienda, ATH, Servibanca. So if the pin is asked before the card is handed back then there is something wrong.

Kat, your bank has be able and do something it is their bank card. I used my Bancolombia card in Zara Covent Garden about six months ago and got over 700 pounds worth credited into my account that night. Bancolombia realized something was wrong (half of the purchases were done in Lisbon and Madrid) and cancelled my card, sent me an e-mail and two days later I got my 700 pounds credited back. Their insurance covered it all.

Use the ATM inside the bank! When using it at the market, use the ATM as a credit card. I never used my pin #, they think it is a credit card.
And be careful if you withdraw a lot of cash, sometimes they will follow you!.

Hello again!

Yes, I remember hearing about this last year in the UK, even where I lived in the south in a not particularly big town. As miamimike says above it's a fit on device that goes over the real slot. I've never seen one myself but a friend did in the high-street. Luckily it was before he put his card in but he did say it just looked a bit out of place, and as he was also aware of the scam he actually managed to pry it off before handing it in. So at least you could always try the same if in doubt.

I hope you get recompensated.

I found out as soon as my statement arrived and I saw the transactions. with the other English card it been fine so far but I am going to cancel it anyway just in case.

ATM's I've got about 6 different ATMs that I visit. I'm familiar with the looks of all of them. All are in well populated areas and may be a bit harder to tamper with. Even when I use them I'm always cautious of any delays, no receipts....... If my gut says no go, I'm out in a flash. Every time I use the ATMs, I return home to check my account on the internet. Even when not using my ATM card during a particular week I check my account every other day. Colombian hackers are well trained and clever.

A sucker is born every minute and two to take him Webmamco stated something that I knew a long time BEFORE being in Colombia and it is worth remembering. I used this method over 10 years ago, great for getting administrative passwords from unsuspecting MIS guy "fixing" my computer. Ahhh, the good o' days.

I'd say there is a great chance of someone getting your vital information off a public computer.

One of the main tools of theft is a simple piece of software that has been around since the beginning of computers.

Keystroke savers.

Very simple. EVERYTHING a person types on the keyboard is SAVED in a file. The owner of the computer sees you using the machine and simply copies the file, looks to see what you've typed and BINGO, instant access if you've been looking at your bank account, Email not so bad. Not just Colombia but everywhere.

Keystroke savers can be remotely loaded on your HOME computer and accessed remotely. A "virus" threat that is becoming more common.

Yep, I'd never use a public computer, never. I wouldn't sleep well.

I don't see whay your Kat

I don't see whay your bank will refuse this. Both my sister and Dad have had their card "cloned" here in the UK, but this was before chip and pin. Both HSBC and Barclays contacted them over these unusual transactions (it was in areas they had never been to before) and they gave them the money back and issued new cards.

But this is a real problem, here in the UK its been cornered especially by Sri Lankan and Albanian criminal gangs. They put the cover on over the cash machine and fit a camara to record your pin number. Then they put it on any plastic card and take money out using your pin.

ATM fraud. You fail to mention how exactly you think your card has been cloned.
Do you remember having put the card in an ATM that didn't give you any money? The way they get your funds from the ATM is by use of a fake device mounted on top where your card goes in. And an overhead camera records your pin.

Obviously if it didn't give you any money you should remember putting your card into one of these rigged ATMS. The other method they use is the following: I've known people with bank accounts in the U.S where the ATM card and pin has been sent via the mail to Bogota. Worst thing you can do. Someone at the mail room or possibly even in customs intercepts these ATM cards regularly then just wait for the PIN to arrive. Now the U.S requires activation of a new card in the U.S. which just shows how elaborate this fraud is. As they get it activated before they begin the ATM runs in Colombia.

Once activated they get this card and pin to an accomplice in Colombia who hurries to the ATM daily and withdraws to the max until the account is dry. People have lost thier life savings like this. Banks have not responded either in these situations. So those are two ways the crooks do this.

1) A device mounted on the machine with a camera overhead. Quite lame really as one can cover the keys and get suspicious if the ATM is acting up and not dispensing any money or keeps your card. But still people get done by this method all the time.

2) They intercept mail of the new ATM cards and PINS sent from abroad to your Colombia residence. There are no other ways of doing it that I'm aware of as far as getting your funds from the ATM. Oh and er scopolamine too. But that's another story.

I didn't know how it happened, i was so unaware of my surrounding, but the odd thing is, my mum sent me the bank statements, I was checking these and I noticed that money was taking out like 6 times on the same day and only small amounts like 10.000, then 20,000 and back to 10,000 I ask why bother to go to the same atm to withdraw just little amounts, why not take a big amount in one go? and if you know villavo, you will know that usually the atm's are in town center, then why this person bother to come to the same atm 6 time in day from where ever he lives, i wonder if the bank is involved too? my mum is still doing some enquieres there.
